The Scene: FLARE was there on Wednesday, September 26th, as six of the youngest, hippest, most creative hairstylists in Canada (all under the age of 26) competed to win L’Oréal Professional’s Runway Style Competition. Diana Dagar of Cappucci Salon and Spa in Toronto took home the gold after working against the clock with only 15 minutes to create her model’s winning look—a masterful updo with a cream butterfly hairpiece suitable for the catwalks of Milan.

How did you get your start in the biz?
I was enrolled in university, but knew it wasn’t for me so I quit. Soon after, I became a receptionist at a salon where my passion for styling hair grew. I was so inspired by what I saw each day.

Who is your hair muse?
My sister Dalida—she’s my idol (a stylist also, at Marc Anthony Salon in Toronto). I always felt like I was in her shadow, but tonight I’ve finally come out.

What’s your biggest hair pet-peeve?
The drop-curl with a traditional French twist. It’s so high-school prom!

What’s your trick for a bad hair day?
Back-combing. And a lot of hairspray!

Are you ready to take on the runways at Paris Fashion Week?
Yes! This is all so surreal. I don’t even know when I leave!

Where do you see yourself a year from now?
Working for L’Oréal.

Hair Pro Tip: Don’t wash your tresses every day. Diana suggests washing every two to three days to keep your hair in top form. “Washing daily strips your hair and creates dryness,” says Diana.
