The Comedienne, Annie Murphy
“And it’s all thanks to my eyebrows,” tweeted Annie Murphy, 27, after The Hollywood Reporter announced her casting in the upcoming CBC sitcom Schitt’s Creek. The bushy arches that were the bane of her high-school years made Murphy a convincing relative of the real-life father-son team Eugene and Dan Levy; she also has the comic timing required to hold her own against Eugene and his frequent collaborator Catherine O’Hara, who play the parents to her celebutante. The role had her studying Olsens and Lohans, though for the Ottawa native, some moves came more naturally than others, like a truly Canadian mastery of whacking June bugs with her clutch during summer-night shoots. Off-screen, Murphy’s style features basics from H&M, Zara and Urban Outfitters mixed with quirky personal pieces such as a gold mini kaleidoscope she wears on a chain, a gift from her husband, Hollerado singer Menno Versteeg. Over the past year, she’s had to rebuild her wardrobe after losing everything in a still-unexplained house fire. “I was like, Ugh, I hate all my stuff! I just want to burn everything!” she laughs. “And then it happened, so I’m kind of eating my words.”
