Summer is usually the season of hot Hollywood hookups, but this month we’ve seen two major splits: Scott Disick and Kourtney Kardashian (9+ years) and Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck (who announced their impending divorce one day after their 10th wedding anniversary). Ten does indeed seem to be a tricky number for Hollywood marriages, as couples like Gwyneth and Chris, Tom and Nicole and David Arquette and Courtney Cox split up after a decade of marriage. Some attribute the “10 year itch” to California’s tricky divorce laws, which designates a decade as “long duration” (read: the pre-nup goes out the window and alimony can go through the roof).
But it’s not all doom and gloom (and pitbull divorce lawyers)—there are a handful of Hollywood couples still standing after many years…and yes, a few scandals. They’ve blown past their expiration date and have given us all a reason to believe in TL4Ever. Or at least until year 11.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
When the first photos of a vacationing Brad, Angelina and Maddox came out in April 2005, effectively confirming their relationship, no one could have predicted that close to 10 years later they would be parents to six children and a rock-solid married couple. Together, they’ve managed to maintain their spot atop the Hollywood food chain and have set the bar for celebrity philanthropy. There is no celebrity couple that is more glamorous and fascinating—when Brad and Angelina show up on the red carpet, it’s a very good night.
David and Victoria Beckham
These two just celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary (which, when translated from celebrity to civilian, is about 30 years). They have four gorgeous kids and have weathered her Spice years, his soccer god stauts, a move to America, a reality show, Victoria’s fake boobs and David’s frosted tips. (Also, a few cheating rumours on his part, but let’s not kill the buzz.) Here’s to 16 more years of #TeamBeckham.
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi
After meeting backstage at an awards show in 2005, Ellen and Portia have forged one of Hollywood’s most solid marriages. It’s hard to measure now how groundbreaking their relationship is, but, looking back, the DeGenereses (Portia has changed her legal name) were one of the first same-sex couples living and working in the spotlight—and out of the closet.
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith
Divorce and “open marriage” rumors have been following the Smiths for years, but Jada and Will seem to be pretty zen about it. They rarely respond to tabloid reports and Jada has repeatedly said she’s not one to keep a watchful eye on her husband. In interviews, both are candid about the struggles of juggling careers and a demanding family life, and how ambition can affect a marriage. Celebrities, they are just like us.
