FEATURED R&B ARTIST
Describe the perfect Sunday
At home, curled up in my bed and watching TiVo with my little pug (Dre). I like to play catch-up with all of the shows I miss when I’m on the road, like the awards. And I love when my girls come over to chill and have a good time.
What do you want to accomplish in the music industry?
I want to just keep on evolving as an artist. I’m competitive, so I won’t stop until I’m setting records.
What inspired the song 2U?
It was one of those things that just came out. It was such a last-minute recording. I was in L.A., wrapping the album up, and my producer just sent me the song. I ended up singing it and it just worked.
Favourite R&B song of all time
“X Factor” by Lauren Hill
I read that Tupac Shakur is your idol. What makes him special to you?
I grew up listening to him. The first performance I ever did was “Dear Mama” and I got a standing ovation in Ottawa at Carlton University. The moment I got off the stage I knew I was meant to do this. My mother ran up to me and it was just crystal clear to me that this was it for me. I picked a song by Tupac because I’ve always felt a really deep connection to him. Our birthday’s are on the same day and any time I saw him in interviews and stuff I felt a similarity between us.
What do you want your fans to know about the real Keshia?
I want them to know I’m a lot like them. When I see them at shows and they’re nervous and shy and don’t know what to say, I want them to know I’m real and that I go through the same things they do. When I make my music and do the videos, I always have them in my heart. Always.
If you weren’t blessed with the ability to sing, what would you do?
I’d be in the music business. Not a lot of artists like the side outside of the studio, but I love it all. I want to own a record label one day and find talent. I love every part of the business. I want to be in the boardroom meeting and in the studio.
Do your different backgrounds influence your music and sound?
Definitely. I’m Trinidadian, Portuguese and Puerto Rican. What’s cool is Canada is great place to be mixed and live in your culture. My up-bringing has affected the way I’m open to different genres of music across the board.
If you could record with any artist, who would it be?
I’d love to record with Coldplay
Any future CD’s in the works?
Yah, I’m working on an album right now. It’s going to be released later this year. It’s a lot edgier. The album is urban edge with a lot of attitude.
