Classically trained dancer/actor Nichola Burley plays the lead street dancer opposite Britain’s Got Talent winner George Sampson in what’s destined to be the next cult dance flick, Streetdance 3D. In order to learn her hip-hop moves for the film, she trained for 10-12 hours a day for six weeks. Looks like it’s paid off—the film was a massive hit in the UK and is making its way to theatres in Canada this Friday Oct. 1st. We caught up with Burley for a quick chat a couple of days ago at Toronto’s Thompson hotel. Here are some of the highlights:
Favourite Dance Films: “I was amazed by the music and dancing and how these worlds came together in Save the Last Dance, but my favourite is Stomp the Yard.”
Favourite hip-hop artist: “Drake is amazing. His lyrics are so intelligent.”
Inspired by: London’s hip-hop dance troupe Boy Blue Entertainment.
Career Dreams: “I really want to do more physically challenging films,” says Burley “I love Hilary Swank’s [ability] to transform herself into different people.”
