Holiday Pre-Party
Start your engines, style pros! The holidays are right around the bend, and from gift shows and frock-shopping to beauty binges (oh my!) – this month’s West Coast Alert gets your giddy up for the glamour-dipped weeks ahead. —Susie Wall

ECO-CHIC Sweeten up your carryall collection with the coveted new Farah tote from Victoria’s planet-conscious, style-minded Sparrow Handbags. Love the Kelly Wearstler-esque trellis pattern (like you need any more of those chain link throw pillows, anyways), the cheeky iPhone pocket tucked inside and the fact that this saucy little sack is totally organic – right down to the cotton twill body and hemp handle. P.S. All Sparrow bags are cruelty free – who knew such a pretty purse could be anything but?

BEAUTY BOITE Tired of trekking downtown for your big city beauty fix? Get a jump on your party season prep work and head to South Surrey’s Beautilicious for a jackpot of makeup, hair and skincare confections. Cult status product faves such as Filly Lilly, Booty Parlour, Cargo, DuWop, Bliss Spa and 100% Pure abound at this girly treasure box, opened by former colour expert and interior designer Scarlett Ballantyne. Did I mention they offer private parties and pin-up photography sessions, war paint and all? Time to break out the whipper tickler, beauty queen. Unit #3 – 3268 King George Hwy, 604-542-5442.

PONY UP Gone are the days of longing to view Chulo Pony’s entire collection of drool-worthy pieces all in one location. Once only sold in select quantities at hip shops around town (and seen on the backs of everyone from Sarah McLachlan and Anne Heche to Gabrielle Miller), the BC-based brand has opened its first retail space in the famed Lido building in East Van – and groupies are going gaga. Look for a stellar turnout of nubbly tweeds, cashmere and wool coats, as well as holiday cocktail frocks, wrap dresses and killer knits. Store hours expand this month – Monday through Saturday, 11-5. Sorry folks, no phone on site. (Cool means low key, after all). 518 East Broadway, or email for more details.

TOUR DE FORCE Perish the thought of another Grinch-worthy holiday decorating session at your modern girl flat – complete with dull, dusty ornaments and a few boughs of ‘borrowed’ holly? Give back and get inspired at the Homes for the Holidays (November 29-30) tour to benefit the Kids Help Phone. For $40, you’ll see five west side wonder-cribs sparkle amidst festive decor (rustic, urban, girly – you name it) with the help of some of the city’s top interior visionaries (The Cross, 18 Karat, Country Furniture, Liberty, Restoration Hardware). Buh-bye you Dyson-clogging, Dollar Store icicles! Visit for details.

TRUE ORIGINAL Set aside your Madonna-in-concert memories and head back to BC Place Stadium for Vancouver’s inaugural One of a Kind Christmas Show and Sale. Whether you’re amped up for holiday shopping or in the mood to be a rebel recessionista, this gift, art, fashion and accessories buffet has all the makings of a one-stop glamour shop. (Just keep your hands off the vintage brown and cream lace clutch by New York’s Rebel Designs – it’s like, totally spoken for).

WIN A TRIP TO AUSTRALIA In celebration of Baz Luhrmann’s new movie, Australia, FLARE and Tourism Australia are sending one winner and a guest Down Under. Enter at starting November 17th! Contest closes January 11, 2009.
