Olivia Wilde may be a natural blonde, but you’d never know it thanks to her dramatic dark roots. When the actress went platinum last year, she had the first few inches of her crown painted dark, leaving her with visible roots or inverse colour, a trend that has also been spotted on Evan Rachel Wood, Kristen Stewart and Margot Robbie. At first glance, this may look like the stars have merely skipped an appointment with their colourist, but in reality, it’s a calculated style that requires a trip to the salon.

“You need to subtly blend the roots into the colour,” says Tony Pham, owner of Toronto-based salon LAC + Co. The end result should be a contrast but not one so sharp that there is a straight line, where the two colours come together. The pro recommends blending out the root shade (whether it’s painted on like Kristen’s or it’s your natural regrowth) with very fine highlights.

Both Pham and Chloe Ascott, of London-based Hare & Bone, recommend a maximum root length of two to three inches. If you’ve let your natural roots grow in, take note that you may experience greasier than normal strands. “Virgin hair has all its natural oils,” says Ascott, who recommends turning down the water temperature in the shower and avoiding scrubbing your scalp when shampooing. Water that’s too hot and aggressive cleansing can overstimulate the hair glands, which can make your mane greasier. Also, keep a dry shampoo on hand in between washes.
