Tuesday Test-Drive: Thann Shiso Hair Mask

Hydrate parched locks with protein and plant extracts

Call me un-Canadian, but I am not a fan of cold weather—and neither is my hair. After braving last weekend’s frigid temperatures to watch a holiday parade (sans chapeau—tsk, tsk!), my hair definitely felt worse for wear. Wintry winds have your mane feeling parched, too? Time to call in a miracle worker: Thann Shiso Hair Mask.

The creamy mask’s namesake ingredient, shiso extract, is the perfect moisturizer for weather-beaten hair, given that Asian herbalists have long known the shiso plant to survive even the most extreme droughts and climates. Also a potent antioxidant, it’s partnered with ceramides, wheat protein and jojoba oil to make this mask a hair-repair hero.

After rinsing out my shampoo, I applied the mask from root to tip and let it sit for 10 minutes (the directions say five to 10, so I opted for the max) before putting my head back under the water.

As the mask instantly smoothed my tangles, I knew I was in for a treat. The post-shower results did not disappoint. My hair felt way softer than it had even pre-parade, with far less frizz than usual. The lasting shine and soft scent seal the deal for my new winter hair-care staple.

Thann Shiso Hair Mask, $33. Available at, select stores and spas across Canada and Thann concept stores.
