One of the biggest beauty statements to come out of last night’s Met Ball was a deep red lip that was worn by a handful of starlets, including Camilla Belle, Lana Del Rey and Kate Bosworth. The claret hue was perhaps a nod to the dark and dramatic lips of the 1930s–the heyday of both stereotypical “Old Hollywood glamour” and Elsa Schiaparelli, one of Costume Institute’s honorees.
While such dark colours are usually reserved for the cooler seasons, we love the idea of wearing a vampy lip for spring. While everyone else is sporting petal pinks and soda pop shades, a slick of bordeaux or aubergine has an air of mystery. Take inspiration from Bosworth: The simple, graphic makeup and severe bun bring the focus right to the lips. The key to this look is perfect execution–no smudgy application here.
