Miss Oops Dry Sponges

Miss Oops Dry Sponges

OOPS, I DID IT AGAIN Rushing to get ready in the morning, I often get make-up powder on my collar or deodorant marks on my LBD. “Oops” is usually the last word that comes to mind, but stuff happens and when it does, I now reach for Miss Oops Dry Sponges, $18. You just rub the magic dry sponge vigorously on your oops and watch it vanish before your eyes. Thank goodness there’s help for us wannabe it-gals who always manage to look so put-together. Some of us need a little help!

The Body Shop “For Me, For You” Shea Lip Care Duo

The Body Shop “For Me, For You” Shea Lip Care Duo, $15.

GOODBYE DARKNESS; HELLO FRIEND The Body Shop’s annual campaign to support the “Stop Violence in the Home” Campaign starts this Monday, July 28th. When you purchase a “For Me, For You” Shea Lip Care Duo, approximately $9 of the sale goes toward The Canadian Women’s Foundation and their efforts to help women exposed to domestic violence. Treat yourself and your BFF to chapped-free lips, and you may also be helping a friend you haven’t met yet. The Body Shop research shows that 67% of victimized women would rather confide in a friend than family or the police. Pamphlets on how to help a friend in need will be in store starting July 31st. But wait, there’s more. The product comes from a fair trade deal that supports more than 400 women from the Tungteiya co-operative in Ghana—Suzie Dicker, Beauty Intern.

Lip Stain

SIZZLIN’ LIPS, BATMAN Batman The Dark Knight premiered last week and the film’s leading lady, Maggie Gyllenhaal, put the red in red carpet. You will often see Maggie sporting a red stained lip and it worked perfectly for her on that warm summer evening. The benefit of using a stain is that it lasts all night long and it gives a sexy natural lip effect rather than anything too “done” looking. The downside is that once it’s on, it’s there to stay, so do a practice run the night before. Try Vincent Longo Lip & Cheek Stain in My Sunshine or NARS Lip Gloss Stain in Daredevil to get the red hot results. See Maggie’s look on the red carpet »

Le Jardin Après la Mousson

Le Jardin Après la Mousson

Le Jardin Après la Mousson, 50 mL, $98; 100mL, $145.

HERMÈS, TAKE ME AWAY For some, a summer scent means coconut and vanilla, visions of balmy beaches in her mind. While others dream of the truly exotic. Hermès Un Jardin Après La Mousson takes inspiration from an Indian garden after it’s been hit by a summer monsoon. Refreshing, yet earthy. If, like us, you’ve never had the privilege of visiting the stylish destination thus far, no matter. A whiff of Un Jardin, with notes of pepper, mango and ginger, will take you there—Suzie Dicker, Beauty Intern.

Benefit B-Spot

PUT IT ON + HIT YOUR B-SPOT = SCORE THE GUY? Remember those commercials—with the girl walking down the street, hair blowing in the breeze, the scent of her perfume causing cute guys to get up and follow? Benefit B-Spot aims to re-create that spell. Here’s an experiment: spritz it on your most seductive pulse points for your next night out. Included in the box, you’ll find a body map, which helps you locate your own b-spot to garner the effect you seek. Dainty miss? Hit the traditional wrist and neck spots. Ever the diva? Spray the back of your neck. If your hair catches hold of the scent it will last forever. Either way, lush mango, provocative peony and steamy sandalwood are sure to attract that nosy fella in no time—Suzie Dicker, Beauty Intern.

Benefit B-Spot, $38.

Karl Lagerfeld Model

CRUISIN’ FOR BEAUTY Karl Lagerfeld took to the high seas of Miami for his 2009 Resort Collection. Not only were the models expected to “walk on water” they also had to look their summer best with pink pastel eyes, petal pink lips and dewy skin. Pink eyeshadow can be very hard to pull off, but if you want to do it right, prime your eyelids beforehand so you have an even palette to work with. Choose a pastel pink shadow and use it on the entire eyelid, then apply a few coats of mascara to define your eyes. An easy way to achieve that dewy look is to stay hydrated and moisturized with a spritz of Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist after you’ve applied your makeup. Not only will you glow, you’re makeup will stay in place all day long.

Annabelle Eye Makeup Remover Cloths

QUICK FIX Many a bathroom visit has been spent painstakingly correcting a smudged line or a wonky flick of liquid eyeliner, disintegrating toilet paper in hand. That’s why we brought Annabelle Eye Makeup Remover Cloths, small enough to fit into our mini-purse, on our last dance floor outing. The best part? They’re super gentle and hypoallergenic. No stinging at all! And that means no extra rinsing. Which is why we loved them twice as much when we swooped off our makeup, dropped our heels, and fell into bed in the wee hours…

Shiseido The Makeup Fine Eyeliner

LE CLASSIQUE C’EST CHIC Liquid eyeliner is a timeless look I create on my clients all the time. And I’m always being asked how to do it. Audrey Hepburn was famous for her cat eyes, but even the ink-shy can benefit from the thickening lash effect you can get from liquid eyeliner. My eyeliner du jour is Shiseido The Makeup Fine Eyeliner in Soft Black ($35). It’s the easiest way to draw a straight line because it’s essentially a marker. To give the illusion of thicker eyelashes, use the eyeliner to draw a very thin line along the upper lash line, keeping as close to the root of your eyelashes as possible. Voilà! An instant classic.

EOS Ultra Moisturizing Shave Cream

SMOOTH MOVES Did you notice a new shaving cream line suddenly appear on your drugstore shelf this summer? We did. We initially fell for EOS’s snappy coloured packaging, in really cute scents such as Pomegranate Raspberry, Island Blue and Vanilla Bliss. But we made it a summer long affair when we experienced the dream-cream formulas that didn’t irritate or dry out our skin. The slip-proof soft plastic bottles say something on it about containing antioxidants to treat our legs with anti-aging goodness, but alas, we’re only in it for the short term gain—radiant legs that knock ‘em dead in our summer heels —Suzie Dicker, Beauty Intern.

WANTED Angelina Jolie’s new movie Wanted is proving to be a blockbuster action hit at the box office, but we’re loving her off-screen softer side. Her next smash hit? Get ready to sniff it instead of view it. We’ve got it on good authority that Jolie is soon to star in her own perfume. We wonder if the fragrance will have base notes of Eau de Baby Powder or perhaps musk notes reminiscent of her dark past. If not Jolie, perhaps fellow hot mama Halle Barry will settle on a powdery-innocent scent, since she’s launching a perfume with Coty in 2009 —Suzie Dicker, Beauty Intern.

Ralph Lauren Model

SUMMER LOVIN’ With temperatures reaching record highs (finally) it’s time to heat up your summer beauty look. Some classic looks we love are red lips, deep red nails and soft pink blush. For an updated twist, try these 3 subtle changes:
• Use a coral-based red lipstick instead of old-fashioned ruby red—the look is more subdued, but it’s still got that classic flair.
• Also try an orange nail polish instead of red, or even try fuchsia for a change.
• Lastly, get rid of that boring old pale pink blush and get yourself a hot pink cream blush (see Ralph Lauren’s spring runway look, above). One to try: Kevyn Aucoin Creamy Moist Glow in Liquifuschia.

Candace Bushnell

Candace Bushnell

BOOK’N IT WITH P&G The beauty posse got a real treat this week when P&G Beauty took us to the Bata shoe museum to meet Candace Bushnell, author of Sex & the City and Lipstick Jungle. In a room full of Toronto’s best-heeled members of the press, I had to wonder, is there anything more to life than owning the latest, greatest designer shoe? (FYI—That was my best Carrie impersonation). According to Bushnell, shopping for the next hot Manolo is a life-altering occurrence safely stowed in the past. Today, she gets her kicks just knowing she can buy any designer bag or shoe known to man with her own hard-earned cash. Psst. She’s even been known to clomp around in Crocs. Sigh. She really is everywoman—Carlene Higgins, Associate Beauty Editor.
