Dior waterproof eyeliner

SEX, DRUGS, ROCK & ROLL… AND MAKEUP? MySpace muse Harley Viera-Newton is a promising up and comer. As a bassist with Lissy Trullie and the Fibs, they’re already known among the fashion set as “Manhattan’s Downtown Darlings”. Viera-Newton has a firm following as a DJ at New York’s East Village bar, Lit. But now she’ll need to take time out from band practice and her studies at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study, to create play lists inspired by Dior Beauty’s seasonal colour collections. As Dior’s new host DJ, Viera-Newton will spin at all their upcoming stylish affairs. A word of advice: bring some Dior waterproof eyeliner to last the night! ‘Cause every rock chick needs her morning-after black eyeliner look—Maxine McLachlin, Beauty Intern.

Givenchy Phenomen’ Eyes

Givenchy Phenomen’ Eyes

TEEN QUEEN One of my favourite makeup artists, Pati Dubroff, had the opportunity to work with Vanessa Hudgens for the The Teen Choice Awards recently and gave me the lowdown on how she got those eyes to really pop! Pati lined her entire eye with Benefit Badgal black kohl eyeliner going over it with a soft black eyeshadow so it would last the entire night. The burst of colour came from a mix of subtle purple eyeshadow used to define the eye. The best palette to use is Cle de Peau No. 15, with pink, bright purple, muted grayish-purple and champagne, so you can choose the shades that work best for you. The final step is a great black mascara. Everyone is talking about the new mascara by Givenchy called Phenomen’ Eyes (pick one up while cross-border shopping). The brush is a tiny ball with short bristles that allows you to get every last lash. Vanessa’s look was complete with a swipe of Neutrogena sheer pink gloss

Paul Starr

Paul Starr

A STARR IS GONE “I think that the world just got a little less pretty.” Those words came from a “shocked” Jennifer Garner, a long time pal of Paul Starr, makeup artist extraordinaire. Garner won’t be the only one who’ll miss him; his client roster ranged from Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson, Salma Hayek, and Lindsay Lohan to name a few. Starr, 51, was found dead Tuesday morning. L.A. police forced their way into his home after friends and neighbors became concerned that they had not heard from him in several days. The makeup artist wrote Starr on Beauty: Conversations with Thirty Celebrated Women, he created Flaunt magazine from 1998-2001, and he was the first celebrity makeup artist to work in-house with cosmetic titan Estée Lauder. He’ll be sadly missed—Maxine McLauchlan, Beauty Intern.

Suki Color

Suki Color

WE SPOKE, THEY LISTENED We’re all on a quest to become greener in our lives, right? We recycle, drive hybrids and use metal water bottles, but our makeup routine hasn’t necessarily adjusted with the times. It’s hard to know where to look and what to use, so I want to introduce you to a great line called Suki Color. They leave out synthetics, dyes, gmos and petrochemicals. I love the Pure Cream Stain for Lips and Cheeks (it comes in seven really good colours) and the rich pigment mascara. Keep your eyes peeled for more lines popping up or existing lines that are changing their formulas to cater to our demand for healthier products. Almay, Physician’s Formula, Korres, Sue Devitt Beauty and Cargo are all working on less wasteful packaging and better-for-you products. The future of makeup is looking bright green.

Pimps and Pinups Salon

Pimps and Pinups Salon

MOD MEN Born in sunny South Australia, Simon Charrison and his cousin James opened Pimps and Pinups in East London that sent shock waves through the beauty masses. Now, they’re bringing the same gutsy salon concept across the pond. Opening in Manhattan’s Lower East Side this fall, the duo will offer a range of styles from flapper-style bobs to glamorous 50’s updos to swinging’ 60’s beehives in line with their vintage roots. Sure, they offer modern hairstyles too, but the Vaudeville-meets-burlesque décor is sure to inspire daringness among patrons. Charrison took a survey of Manhattan salons and determined a need for mid-priced dos for trend-hungry customers, resulting in throwback prices ranging from $60 to $100 per visit. Will local Lower East Side bar bands soon front women in Winehouse-like hives or Katy Perry-ish pin-up curls? It’s just a Porter flight away to find out—Maxine McLachlan, Beauty Intern

PETAL TO THE METAL As fall speedily approaches, here’s one last hoorah to a worthy warm weather scent we have yet to dish about. Cynthia Rowley, who’s better known for her fashion sense than her nasal know-how, partnered with Avon to create two floral fragrances called Flower and Petal. The former scent surrounds you with freesia, warm vanilla, Casablanca lily, velvet woods and sandalwood while Petal has the same notes but in a softer version. Day-to-night partners perhaps? With charming bottles and hand-picked notes by the designer herself, there’s just cause to celebrate tonight—Maxine McLachlan, Beauty Intern.

The Society Toronto

The Society Toronto

GREAT GATSBY! Dozens of Daisy Buchanan look-alikes gathered last week at the RCYC Island Clubhouse and what a swank affair it was. Sponsored by Marc Jacobs Daisy perfume, The Society girls played host to guys and dolls dressed in their dandiest wears (pearls and feathers for the girls, seersucker and sweater vests for the boys) whilst sipping on speakeasy cocktails. We love that Canada is catching on to the whole fancy-dress party craze that has taken over the party scene in London. Why wait until Halloween to host a cult-movie themed bash? We threw a Grey Gardens affair just last month. It’s so fun to play dress-up among friends even if we are supposed adults. And let’s not forget the hair and makeup we can get away with! Frilly faux eyelashes, beauty marks and bobbed-out wigs here we come. For more info on The Society, visit thesocietytoronto.com.

Fragrance Trivia: Did you know that MJ Daisy was named after the designer’s dog, who was named after Daisy Buchanan, the main character played by Mia Farrow in The Great Gatsby?—Carlene Higgins, Associate Beauty Editor.

Dove Pay Beauty Forward

Dove Pay Beauty Forward

PASS IT ON The age-old saying “Smile and the world smiles with you” may as well be the slogan behind Dove’s new self-esteem initiative. Starting today until November 30th, Pay Beauty Forward challenges women to tell fellow females how beautiful they are throughout the day to help build their self-esteem. Whether you tell your gal pal that her bangs are brilliant or her body looks smok’n in her LBD, it’s a simple step for big rewards. Aside from feeling great on the inside, let Dove know what you’re doing in the name of healthy self-love and they might just give you $500 to keep up the good work. Why not bake cookies with happy messages like “Miss Lovely Legs” or “Sister Sexy Eyes” and pass them around the office? We don’t think HR will mind—Suzie Dicker, Beauty Intern.

P.S. You’re beautiful 🙂

Lanvin

BLACK POWER Fall is only a few weeks away, so while you’re still wearing your bronzer and pink lip tint, I thought I’d give you a heads up on a new makeup trend you’re going to love: “Panda eyes”. Both Lanvin and Balenciaga featured this look in their fall shows and sparked a lot of buzz in the makeup world. The key to this fresh look is the black cream shadow and the rounded shape. It’s a total 360 on the ever-popular smoky eye, which features a gradation of colour, powdery shadow, and a heavy lash. This glowing eye is about one solid colour that gives dimension to the eyes with a cream rather than a powder. It can be messy though, so try out this look at home to see how it works best for you before showing it off to the rest of the animal kingdom.

VANITIES What do Justin Timberlake and Kate Moss have in common? They’re both in the race for “I’m in the money” beauty endorsements. Justin is the new face of Givenchy’s newest juice Play for Men, in which he’s pictured relaxing and listening to music on his private jet. Kate Moss let it slip to Vogue that she plans on buying her own private jet called the “Kate Express”, too, which surely she can afford with the success of her first two namesake fragrances. But there was another nugget of info, barely audible, in this rarest of interviews. Her own makeup line in the works with Coty? Get ready for the definitive line on smudgy kohl rimmed peepers girls. The cash registers are already humming—Maxine McLachlan, Beauty Intern.

Cutex vintage lipsticks - Cargo PlantLove™ Botanical Lipstick

Cutex vintage lipsticks – Cargo PlantLove™ Botanical Lipstick

GROOVY BABY With the upcoming release of the film Hippie Hippie Shake later this year, you may be inspired to find Sienna Miller’s nude sixties lip colour that she sports in the film. We found collectable Cutex vintage lipsticks at a flea market, perfect for displaying in shadowboxes on our wall (we certainly don’t recommend wearing the 50+ year old shades, no matter how true-to-era they are). Find the inner-hippie inside of you with Cargo PlantLove™ Botanical Lipstick in Sarah Chalke, $20. It’s a pale shimmering pink hue that’s nude but prettier. Plus, when you plant the psychedelic packaging, flowers grow. Far out man—Suzie Dicker, Beauty Intern.

GOODBYE SUZIE Q Today is a sad day indeed, because it’s our beloved British intern Suzie’s last day. What will we do without your adorable inquiries about the craziest Shu Uemura eyelashes, so you may wear them about London to your über cool clubs and parties? If only I could forever bite into one of these

super cute birthday cookies you made me (which actually resemble the lip colours that appeared on the fall runways, how cute is that) and remember fondly your perky Monday-morning attitude? But alas, they’ll eventually crumble, as will our beauty dept. without you. Cheerio —Carlene Higgins, Associate Beauty Editor.

ColorOn Eye Envy

ColorOn Eye Envy

THE BRAVE AND THE BEAUTIFUL In FLARE’s beauty department, it’s not in our nature to do anything halfway. Take for example our frequent painstaking attempts to re-create eye makeup looks from the catwalk. Outsiders may think we’re brave for attempting such fanciful looks as Dior S/S 08 (what a fiasco, oy). We digress. Popping into Sephora last weekend, we discovered these press-on eye shadows that come in très chic leopard, zebra and even camouflage prints (solid shimmery ones exist for the faint of heart). We tried them, and honestly, you just press and go for instant perfection. Tell onlookers you hand-painted the believable artistry on yourself. The compulsive liar inside of you will have a riot with their reactions! —Suzie Dicker, Beauty Intern.

L’Oréal Vitamino Color shampoo

L’Oréal Vitamino Color shampoo

THE WEEK IN HAIR Three things happened to my hair in the line of duty this week (yep, it’s my job to get my hair done!) First, I got my hair lightened by Colin Ford, the Education Director for L’Oréal Professionnel at the L’Oréal Academy in Toronto. It’s a refreshing summer change from my stock brown-black hair. Afterwards, he handed me L’Oréal Vitamino Color shampoo, conditioner and a gel masque to use so my hair would recover from the chemical processing and resist fading. Wow. Talk about reuniting with a long-lost friend. I had plum forgotten how amazing the line makes my hair feel even after blow-drying. Lastly, I got a haircut. Thanks to Kim Gell at Exit Salon on Yonge St., I remember what it’s like to have an excellent cut. Sure, you might feel like you’re starring in a hair commercial when you walk out of a salon, but you won’t know how great your haircut is until you wait and wash it three times to see if it keeps sitting pretty—happily, it did—Carlene Higgins, Associate Beauty Editor.
