L’Occitane

Green Olive
We’ve all heard the classic Med secret of using olive oil to attain glossy Riviera-style locks, however it seems the beauty secrets of the ancient fruit don’t end there. Provence-native L’Occitane has developed a certified organic range of skincare formulated with natural oil and water extracts from the exotic olive tree, which is known for surviving the most arid conditions. Olive water extract is rich in antioxidants and potassium, which help to boost the skin’s radiance and protect against daily damage, while olive oil works to leave your skin soft and delectably supple. Available at www.loccitane.ca or call (877) 212-0238.

David Babaii

David Babaii

Braidy Bunch
Remember your old school days’ trick of braiding your shower-damp hair before bed and waking up with a crimptastic coif just in time for homeroom? If, like us, that 80s happy look scared you off of plaited ‘dos for good, fear no more. David Babaii, the original green guru of au natural locks (think Kate Hudson’s beachy mane) has inspired us to try out the no-fuss look once again–– just in time for warmer temps. Babaii’s secret to getting his fave summer look is keeping your braids big and loose (for less crimpy texture) and not too precise. Then, to set the look, spray your locks with David Babaii for WildAid Bohemian Beach Spray before bed, and again after shaking out your locks for added oomph. Hello, goddess. David Babaii for WildAid is available at www.theshoppingchannel.com or call 1-888- 202-0888.

Water Day
In honour of Earth Day, the Aveda family of salons, spas, and stores is holding their third annual I Walk for Water event today, in partnership with WaterCan. Participants in 16 cities across the country are taking part in the five kilometer walk–– the average distance that one has to travel to collect water in a developing country. The event will raise funds for WaterCan’s clean water and sanitation projects in eastern Africa and hopefully raise awareness for the over one billion people around the world that still don’t have access to clean H2O.

Jigga Juice
Fragrance heavyweight Parlux has signed a unique deal with Iconic Fragrances, a licensing company helmed in part by hip-hop mogul Jay-Z. The mega-deal has been in negotiation with the rap star for over nine months, and also includes worldwide fragrance rights for Rihanna, Kanye West, and another “well-established female artist” that has yet to be revealed (could that be you, Sasha Fierce?) The agreement is one of the first of it’s kind as it provides the artists with royalties, profit sharing, and the opportunity to purchase shares of Parlux at the strike price of $5 a pop–– a smart move for both parties as it ensures maximum profit… as long as the said spritzes add big value to the company.

Nix Winter Skin
We’re counting down the days until we can finally retire our opaque Wolfords for the season and sport dresses sans tights instead. In preparation, (don’t even think about skipping post-winter exfoliation) we’ve been testing out Bioelements’ intense buffing cloth made of 100% natural woven cactus fibres. Before you say “ouch!”, the curiously invigorating cloth did wonders on our rough spots (goodbye, winter elbows!) without feeling abrasive, especially with a couple drops of our creamy shower gel. Available across Canada at select spas or visit www.bioelements.com.

Kristin Booth

Kristin Booth

Genie-ous Bedroom Hair
We couldn’t help but notice homegrown funny gal Kristin Booth’s Brigitte Bardot-esque locks when she picked up her Genie award for Best Supporting Actress in the hilarious dating tell-all Young People F*cking. To copy the look for your next night on the town follow these tips we snagged from her stylist:

• To prep hair for lots of body, set dry locks (sans product) in hot rollers and gently unwind once completely cool.
• Divide hair into front (everything before your ears) and back sections. Tease the roots of the back section before pulling into a high ponytail.
• Twist the tail and randomly pull out small pieces to create “loops” before securing into a messy bun with bobby pins and strong-hold hairspray.
• Back comb the front section of hair, then smooth the top with a brush for a sleek finish. Softly pin back the front section in pieces, twisting as you go, for a sexy finish. Spritz your ‘do with John Frieda Frizz-Ease 100% Shine Glossing Mist to keep frizz at bay all night long.

Check out more beauty looks with Kristin in our May issue on newsstands now.

Burt’s Bees

Happy Earth Day, Love FLARE!
Starting today, we’re kicking off a series of Mother Nature-inspired blogs in celebration of Earth Day on April 22. First up on our eco-radar is a new partnership between the purveyor of our all-time fave lip balm, Burt’s Bees, and Evergreen, a Canadian not-for-profit that provides resources to urban communities to encourage healthier, more sustainable cities. In the spirit of “bringing nature back”, the new partnership has many green initiatives in the works for 2009, including an open-to-the public Green City workshop series and the second annual Sustainability Fair at Evergreen Brick Works–– Canada’s first large-scale environmental discovery centre–– which will include demonstrations on critical urban issues such as waste, water, energy, and transportation. Visit www.evergreen.ca for more information.

Gareth Pugh

Gareth Pugh

Pugh Oughta Know
Gareth Pugh’s edgy video presentation for Fall 09 made it pretty hard to spot any strong beauty messages (except for maybe the Beyoncé flavoured high pony), but that didn’t stop the fashion rumour mill––WWD for one–– from dreaming up ideas that the Brit virtuoso had a cosmetics line in the works. Luckily, we contacted Pugh’s PR who quickly squashed the inkling before we even had a chance to start fantasizing about ghoulish liner and faux lashes…

Padma Lakshmi Pantene

The Power of Padma
While Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi continues to steam up blog sites with news of her provocative new ad for U.S. burger chain Hardee’s, Pantene has just announced that the gorgeous Indian-American model and cookbook author will star as the face of their new Nature Fusion haircare line. The collection features naturally derived ingredients to help brittle locks achieve that classic Pantene healthy-hair flip, including avocado, ginger, bamboo, and Cassia essence, which just happens to be sourced from Padma’s home country of India.

Prescriptives

Prescriptives

Gladly a Bridesmaid
Prescriptives’ lovely new In Bloom collection seems the perfect makeup pick for a blushing bride. While yours truly won’t be saying “I do” this season, we’re quite excited to freshen up our own makeup look in time for the Spring wedding circuit. Our fair skin and bright red locks can usually take a warm or cool colour palette (the collection comes in both), but admittedly we were a little scared to give the “Zinnia” lip colour a test drive when we spotted it’s bright, orangey shade in the tube. So, we were pleasantly surprised to find the sheer and somewhat glossy formula gave us the perfect dose of tangy colour. Its elegant-but-still-trendy effect is the perfect “statement lip” for this season’s pending nuptial fest. Bring it on. Available this month exclusively at Holt Renfrew.

Luxtoral

Luxtoral

Flawless Skin
Simon Cowell may play a low-maintenance know-it-all on TV, but he’s not fooling us with his trademark plain tee and care-free attitude. Rumour has it, the vain Brit is against plastic surgery and colouring his hair, but is mad for discovering the latest and greatest in anti-aging skincare. Apparently, his latest find is Luxtoral, an uber-luxe skincare line that focuses on maximizing the skin’s hydration thanks to the key ingredient–– Pacific Ocean rainwater–– which is collected without having touched the ground (to avoid any possible mineral contamination).

Juno Spotlight: Sarah Slean’s Sexpot Locks
We couldn’t take our eyes off Canadian songbird Sarah Slean’s soft and sexy bedroom hair at this year’s Juno awards. Luckily, her hairstylist, Erin Coyle for Garnier Fructis, passed us a cheat sheet on how to copy her look (even if you can’t get your hands on her Andy Thê-Anh frock):

• Apply a generous amount of volumizing mousse to damp hair and blow dry in all directions, using your fingers to lift the roots for added texture and body

• Sweep your hair to the side and secure with a clear hair elastic and bobby pins, if needed

• Spritz individual pieces with Garnier Fructis Style Sleek & Shine Anti-Frizz Spray, than curl with an iron for long lasting waves

• Once curls have cooled, gently shake them out with your fingers and set with an extreme hold hair spray

Chanel, Je Taime
Five years after Baz Luhrmann’s iconic Chanel mini-movie starring Nicole Kidman, his long-time leading lady–– it was said to be the most expensive advert ever created–– the No. 5 saga continues with the quintessential French pairing of director Jean-Pierre Jeunet and his muse, Amélie star Audrey Tautou. The exotic short (which took a staggering three weeks to shoot) will feature a series of missed encounters between Audrey and her co-star eye candy, Travis Davenport, while they make their way from Paris to Istanbul on the Orient-Express (ooh la la!) You’ll be able to catch the film in full on the Internet May 5, but watch out for a sneak preview at www.chaneln5.com at the end of this month.
