Flavour of the Month
Nothing is more satisfying than dark chocolate, rich caramel or delicious café mocha—and we’re not talking about lattés. Brown makeup is a huge trend this winter and the palette can look gorgeous on everyone. Keep brown tones limited to either the eye or the lip, since both can be overwhelming. On eyes, the easiest way to nail the look is with a brown smoky eye. Select a palette that has a wide range of colours, from taupey beige to coffee brown, such as Chanel Quadra Eye shadow in Beiges de Chanel. Keep the darkest colour closest to the lash line and blend out from there. Want old school glamour? Pair it with a red lip. Daring and sexy? Try a chocolate lip. Use a lip gloss with loads of pigment to create depth, which prevents lips from looking too flat and boringly brown. Outline your lips first, using a warm brown lip pencil, then use it to fill them in and finish with a caramel gloss, such as NARS lip gloss in Sandpiper.

Jaqua Hand Crème and Lip Frosting

Jaqua Hand Crème and Lip Frosting

Home Shopping Works
I finally broke the seal on my holiday shopping this week, and after battling the already uber-frosty temps, slippery sidewalks, and obnoxious shoppers, I retreated to my cozy bedroom and decided to shop via iBook instead. I already can’t live without Jaqua Hand Crème and Lip Frosting—they smell and feel like delicious buttercream icing. So why not treat all my girls who will love the adorable packaging—it’s very Gossip Girl—and the yummy flavours? I found these little goodies at www.beautymark.ca, and of course, took part in a little self-gifting while I was at it.

Biotherm / Hôtel Costes

Biotherm / Hôtel Costes

Future Fantastic
Last week I found myself in Paris, the city of lights, love and gastronomy, to help celebrate Biotherm Homme’s 25th Anniversary. A consulting futurist presented scientific developments currently underway by various companies and universities around the world. Topping the list was skin that can be cryogenically stored—literally youth in a bottle. Sound mad? That’s probably what they said about Botox twenty years ago. Biotherm studies show that only 20% of French men use skincare (aside from after shave) today. No wonder they have such deep lines. These guys need a little help from us, so stick Biotherm Homme High Recharge Non-Stop Anti-Fatigue Concentrate in his holiday stocking. There’s 25 years of know-how behind this men’s line.

Although tasty, the event’s molecular appetizers weren’t enough to satisfy my hunger, so a few of us journos grabbed a delicious meal at the Hôtel Costes, the hipster hangout famous for their CD collections mixed by resident DJs. The night ended on a perfect note, a glass of champers and a perfect view to a corner table across the terrace, where Catherine Deneuve smoked and chatted over a late supper with three handsome men.

Paris Hilton

Paris Hilton

More Paris News!
It’s official: Paris and her boy toy Benji have called it quits. We wonder if the hasty split has anything to do with the blonde’s hot reunion with her Greek shipping heir-ex while in Miami for the Victoria’s Secret runway show last weekend. Either way, we recommend Tarte 4 Day Stay Lash Stain to the newly single Ms. Hilton. It’s been making its own headlines with buzz-worthy waiting lists, but after giving it a test run, we’re not in a rush to replace our trademark wand on the daily. But, the low-key look and staying power make it the perfect accessory for teary break-up makeup, or better yet, a rebound rendez-vous on a steamy vaycay.

Paris Hilton

Your New BFF After Nic skipped out on Paris, we kind of lost interest in Ms. Hilton. But, we have to admit, we’ve secretly been tuning in to watch her pick a new BFF. We may re-think our tube time though, since the notorious bombshell may have already ditched her new first lady (don’t act so surprised). We hear she’s already been spotted tearing up London filming round two. Never fear Paris, even if you never find another queen bee, we know your real BFF is still your St. Tropez Bronzer. Or should we say James Read, her personal tan-in-a-bottle expert who personally bronzes
St. Tropez Mini Instant Tanning Systemher from head to toe. No tanning guru of your own on speed dial? Give yourself the V.I.P. treatment with St. Tropez Mini Instant Tanning System, available at Sephora. It includes everything you need to glow like an heiress: exfoliator, tanner, and a moisturizer. –Megan Kirkwood.

Weird Sale Word from Rio is that the Brazilian Society of Esthetic Medicine is doling out free Botox injections to those who make less than $250 a year. The 10-day program gives practice to doctors in training and has been running sporadically since 1998. Over 10, 000 people have participated so far. – Megan Kirkwood

Alexander Wang Spring ‘09

Not So Fast News spread like wildfire this week that Alexander Wang could be collaborating with beauty giant Shu Uemura. Intrigued, we set out to get the gossip ourselves. Sure enough, their Tokyo office denied any possibility that they, or any of their sister companies, would be taking on projects with the NYC designer. Looks like you’ll have to get your dewy skin fix else wear—consider this rumour squashed. – Megan Kirkwood

Eugenia Kumacheva

Eugenia Kumacheva

National Pride Each year, L’Oréal teams up with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) to award their Women in Science prize to five outstanding females from around the world. For the first time, the honour this year will go to a Canadian, Eugenia Kumacheva, of the University of Toronto, for her research in cancer treatment. Kumacheva will be the toast of the town when she officially accepts her award in Paris early next year. Until then, we’re hoping she’s developing a master plan for spending that $100,000 prize. –Megan Kirkwood

Daub & Bauble

Daub & Bauble

Design Matters We just discovered Daub & Bauble’s stylish hand wash, lotion, and luxe dish soap at Indigo stores. Husband-and-wife team Josh and Rachel Bergen were inspired to create the line while decorating their new home. Wanting to leave no stone unturned, they incorporated their love of sophisticated prints and applied it to basic products resting on their countertop. We dipped into Mission Fig & Thyme and were delighted with the light, exotic scent. At last, style and substance right at our fingertips. –Megan Kirkwood

Grand Hotel Jersey

Grand Hotel Jersey

Champagne Chic If you thought your Friday night ritual of martinis and manis was swank, time to move on up ladies. Starting this month, jet over to the Grand Hotel Jersey nestled in the Channel Islands in the UK and bliss out on some bubbly. Perch yourself in the hotel’s new “GHD Spa Bar”, a.k.a Champagne Bar, and sip on champers while your hair gets primped to look the posh part. Don’t forget to reserve your spot (and your Veuve!) in advance on weekends, when the English avant-garde pack the party. With your smooth, glossy locks and favourite flute in hand, you might just catch sight of the latest Br-It-Girl on vacay. –Megan Kirkwood

AG Hair Cosmetics

AG Hair Cosmetics

True Romance Who knew the tale behind my favourite AG Thermal Setting Spray (a must for prepping my tresses for hot rollers) is kind of a love story? Husband and wife team John and Lotte Davis, co-founders and CEOs of AG Hair Cosmetics, have come a long way after a previous failed venture left them struggling to pay bills and avoiding creditors, all the while taking care of two young babes. Today, AG, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in January, is a multi-million dollar brand found in more than 10,000 salons across North America. The dynamic duo were also recently named one of Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneurs of the Year, which just goes to show, true love always wins in the end. –Megan Kirkwood

Margot Grant and Petra Nemcova

Margot Grant and Petra Nemcova

Junior Leader Last week, Women’s Post, the Canadian newspaper for professional gals-on-the-go, celebrated Margot Grant as their latest ‘Woman of the Day’, an award for noteworthy ladies in business. As the granddaughter of Elizabeth Grant, the original beauty guru behind homegrown skincare company Elizabeth Grant International, it would seem Margot was born to succeed. But this is one leading lady who hasn’t taken her family ties for granted. At the tender age of 24, Margot swiftly made over the company image by redesigning the company logo and creating new product packaging – all in the last year alone. Plus, she heads up the company’s charitable division, EG Cares, and acts as a liaison for their A-list fans, including former FLARE cover girl Petra Nemcova and the glow girl herself, la Lopez. Who says hard work doesn’t pay off big-time? –Megan Kirkwood

Dior Holiday Collection palette

Dior Holiday Collection palette

Spies Like This Finding the perfect makeup palette can be akin to searching for the Holy Grail, but Dior struck gold with their new Holiday Collection palette. The problem with many others is the lack of really good shades and you always need more products to truly finish your look. The eye shadows in Dior’s palette include a deep plum, a range of greys, a shimmery white and a soft pink. But it also holds a mini DiorShow Blackout mascara as well as a sheer pink lip gloss to cover all the necessary bases. All you need is your own concealer to match your skin tone and you’re set. Best of all, the entire palette is encased in a stealth black leather zip-up clutch that could easily double as an evening bag.
