Good Hair Day
A lot of confidence can come from a full head of tousled locks, an idea Maya King, founder of Miss MyMy (a line of skincare and hair extensions) is running with. After working with the Angel Hair for Kids Charity, which provides wigs to children dealing with hair loss, she decided to tackle the problem hands on. Using organic hair extensions without chemical treatment, King offers hair reconstruction services to those in need at her new Toronto-based Miss MyMy spa (you can apply through her website). She also specializes in wigs for all hair types and is currently working on hairpieces for Jude Law’s latest sci-fi flick, Repossession Mambo.

Ted Gibson Hair Sheets

Ted Gibson Hair Sheets

Teddy to the Rescue
We all have those flustered mornings when a time-consuming blowout is not in the cards (in fact, they probably occur a little more often than we’d care to admit.) On those mornings, try freshening up à la Anne Hathaway on the awards show circuit, who keeps camera ready between salon visits with oh-so-handy Ted Gibson Hair Sheets. Run the damp sheet over your entire head to eliminate the greasy roots/dry ends dilemma, while smoothing frizz and freshening the scent. Hathaway’s right-hand-hair-man Ted Gibson stocks her up for emergencies, but you can get your own stash at Sephora.

Celebs Go Green
We love us some James Franco, and apparently we’ve got celeb hairstylist Jamal Hammadi to thank for keeping him turned out to perfection on the red carpet. Founder of Hamadi Beauty, these products are made with 100% organic essential oils and plant extracts and do not contain any artificial ingredients, perfumes, or colours. Try the Shea Spray, which the green guru used to keep Kate Beckinsale’s locks glossy and frizz-free for the Golden Globes. Then, count yourself among his other A-lister clients including Kirstin Dunst, Naomi Watts, and Marisa Tomei—which makes sense, since he claims to test only on actresses, never on animals. Visit www.hamadibeauty.com for retailers.

Charlotte Flaunts It
While news of designers dropping like flies during fashion week litters the blogosphere, it’s not all doom and gloom. Sebastian Professional will sponsor London Fashion Week fave and Agyness bestie Henry Holland. The announcement comes on the heels of their newly launched Flaunt Collection ad campaign, starring fellow London-born fashion designer (now New York fashionista) Charlotte Ronson. Tune in next month to see if the designer-turned-model takes a turn on the catwalk.

Happy-Go-Lucky
There’s something to be said for that certain je ne sais quoi glow you get when you’re head over Manolos happy. Positive thoughts have long been thought to improve our appearance and it’s no secret your skin just happens to erupt the same week you’re stressed to bits. Attempting to stay Zen’d out might keep you frown line free, but London-based psychologist Linda Papadopoulos is taking it a step further with her “mood-enhancing” skincare line. PsyDerma is packed with ingredients such as tyrosine and phytokeratin, said to alleviate stress symptoms while stimulating mood-enhancing beta-endorphins, resulting in an enhanced skin appearance. Now that’s something to smile about.

The Supermodels are back…again
Fresh off her dark and sexy return to Chanel for Fall/Winter, Claudia Schiffer is back with a vengeance–– and a money making idea. In addition to nabbing new campaigns for both Dolce & Gabbana Resort and YSL Spring/Summer, the German beauty is rumoured to be launching a new beauty line next summer. Good move, C.

Nailing It
When Beverly Hills, 90210 was remade, we hoped the style would be as great as the original (remember Kelly’s platinum fringe?). And now that we’ve watched it (we know you have, too, so wipe that smirk off your face), we can happily report that beauty is just as important in 90210-land as it used to be. Case in point: OPI just launched three new nail lacquer colours inspired by the girls of West Beverly. With names such as, Pretty & Privileged, you’ll be like, just dying, to get your hands on them. OMG.
90210 by OPI, $9.95 each. Call 800-341-9999 or visit www.opi.com.

January Jones

Golden Girls
Like many of you, my eyes were glued to the red carpet at the 2009 Golden Globes, except I was fixated on the makeup. One popular look of note? Loads of mascara on an otherwise natural eye, combined with a defined colourful lip. There was Cameron’s bright berry pout, Kate’s subdued rose pucker and Heidi’s bold red lip. But my favourite of the evening was January Jones, wearing a beautiful powder blue dress and retro waves paired with a matte coral lip.  So unexpected! To get the look, try Lipstick Queen in Coral Sinner.

Decidedly Diaz
Admittedly, I was a little on the fence when I first spotted Cameron’s look at the Golden Globes last week. I’m usually totally on board with her risk taking ways, especially the way she manages to blend her surfer girl style with her knock-out red carpet wardrobe. Enter the pink Chanel Haute Couture dress and beachy, just rolled-out-of-bed hair. All debates aside, we love Cammy’s red lip/pink frock combo. Gucci Westman, all around makeup guru and Revlon’s global artistic director, personally prepped Cam’s lips with Revlon Matte Lipstick in Really Red, then added a touch of Strawberry Suede to the centre for the perfect red carpet pout.

Britney Spears

Bronze Me, Baby
Admittedly, I’m about as pale as it gets in the skin tone department. And while I’ve learned to love my Snow White tendencies, even I get a hankering for a little sunny glow this time of year. As a self-described faux tan expert, I’ve tried countless formulas, but I have yet to get my hands on Fake Bake – until now. The self-tanner, which is going eco-ish this month with a completely paraben-free formula, is now available at Trade Secrets. I’m already a fan of the temporary dark shade (perfect for eyeing spots you’ve missed) and dye-free formula (nixes orange and blotchy results). The fact that it’s also the best selling brand in Europe and a rumoured favourite of perma-tanned Ms. Spears, means it’s definitely worth a whirl. I’m getting out my loofah gloves as we speak.

Weather Woes
It’s difficult to conjure up pleasant thoughts of snow while we suffer through Snowmageddon. However, perennial skin-saver favourite, Curel, has teamed up with the Starlight Children’s Foundation to help us put our best lady boot forward. From now until March, you can upload a pic of you and your besties making snow angels to www.curel.ca. For every snowy snap, one dollar will be donated to the Starlight Children’s Foundation, which helps grant wishes to children with serious illnesses. Continue the good deeds by slathering your skin with one of Curel’s silky lotions to recover from the icy outdoors; every product purchased donates another 50 cents to the cause.

Lancôme

Lancôme

Hello, Girl Crush
Lancôme recently named ageless beauty Juliette Binoche as the face of their latest dream cream, Rénergie Microlift Night R.A.R.E. Designed for gals 40+, it’s the first skincare product that claims to stimulate your skin’s surface to trigger a biological response while you sleep. French photographer Brigitte Lacombe captured J.B. showing off her little-known artistic capabilities for the campaign. In fact, the actress is in the middle of her Ju’Bilation tour, which includes paintings, past films, and an original dance performance she stars in called “In-I”, which she also co-produced. Catch the multi-talented star, fresh from London and Paris, performing in Montreal until January 17th.

Smells like Fast Food Spirit
Weird and wonderful new products come and go, but the start of a new year has us wondering, who really buys this stuff? With all the latest perfume kitsch making the rounds, an uber-fan might go for the latest in Twilight mania which may smell ghostly, but hopefully not ghastly. However, is there really someone willing to wear Flame, Burger King’s Whopper inspired “scent of seduction” (no joke!)? Check out www.firemeetsdesire.com and decide for yourself.

Youthful Skin

Youthful Skin

Cocktail of Youth?
What gets more buzz than an endorsement from the Mighty Opes? During a recent show on beauty secrets from around the globe, Oprah-ites (aren’t we all?) were sent into a tizzy when it was revealed that many Japanese women drink a daily dose of collagen to keep their skin looking young and healthy (apparently, collagen derived from cows and chickens can be found on numerous Japanese restaurant menus, too.) While aging, our bodies produce less of the fibrous protein that helps keep our skin, hair, nails, and ligaments healthy and strong. That’s why a daily collagen supplement is thought to improve the look and feel of skin in only a few weeks. It’s as easy as mixing a scoop of the tasteless powder (www.cr2000collagen.com for health store locations) into your bedtime O.J. Quick, everyone to Whole Foods!

M.A.C. Dame Edna collection

Edna Knows Best
If you’re looking to start the year with a taste of eccentric glamour, dip into the new M.A.C. collection they’ve cooked up with the divine Dame Edna. Inspired by her lavender locks (au natural, of course) and trademark rhinestone specs, the kitschy packaging and candy coloured shades will definitely feed your mid-winter mojo. For a spicy red pucker, try a dab of Kangarouge lipstick (sans liner). Or, for a look as daring as the Dame’s, try the Wisteria Eye Trio for a colourful twist on the smoky eye. See you on the dance floor, Possums!

Point Grace Turks & Caicos resort

Point Grace Turks & Caicos resort

Detour to De-Tox
Five of my friends bounced around emails this morning about Gwyneth Paltrow’s tips for detoxing blog. Note: it involves “a couple of spoonfuls of extra virgin olive oil at night to help stimulate your liver to eliminate bile and keep its circulation flowing”. Blech. A sample menu for one day of detox involved nothing but oatmeal, tea, a smoothie, juice and soup. Call me crazy, but I’m in no mood to start ’09 in a passed out state from hunger. But another email, entitled “Point Grace Offers Limited-Time Detox Escapes” grabbed my attention. Three nights at the luxurious Point Grace Turks & Caicos resort (with awards and accolades galore) can be mine (and my hubby’s) for just $1595/couple. The “Refresh Escape” includes “a warm, cocooning Marine Algae Wrap”, ocean-front suites that overlook the beach and “delicious yet healthy” meals daily. Emphasis on the word meals. Sure, I’d have to splurge on airfare, but with the choice between ocean water and drinks that taste like sewer water, I’d rather pay and take the sea.

Funny Face
There’s a new gal on the beauty block, and she’s not just a pretty face. CoverGirl has hired Emmy award-winning comedienne Ellen DeGeneres to star in a new campaign for their latest product, CoverGirl & Olay Simply Ageless Foundation. Formulated with Olay’s tried and true Regenerist serum, it’s designed to do double-duty to preserve your youthful look as it disguises fine lines. Ellen might not be the typical top model beauty, but with her hip hop dance moves and funny girl personality, she definitely represents an “ageless” spirit that we adore.
