YOU-KNOW-YOU-LOVE-ME LIP GLOSS Remember a time when a lip gloss was just a lip gloss (you know, when Thursday nights were made for 90210)? Well now, cosmetic brands are making glisten sticks that have to pass Gossip Girl type muster (read: an iPod toting, microderm’ed, Dior-clad fashionista).

CoverGirl Wetslicks Amazemint

CoverGirl Wetslicks Amazemint

CoverGirl Wetslicks Amazemint is a lip gloss that works triple duty as a shiny gloss, instant smile brightener and breath freshener. The blue undertones in Plum Crazy, Un-Wined and Toast-ed instantly make less-than-bleached teeth appear brighter. Plus, Crest™ technology provides the just brushed aroma.

SexySmile 2-in-1 Whitener Gloss

SexySmile 2-in-1 Whitener Gloss

But if actual whitening is what you want, try SexySmile 2-in-1 Whitener Gloss. On one end, a hydrogen peroxide based formula removes stains and a polymer complex shields your teeth from damage. On the other, a fab coloured lippy. Apply both to each respective area three times daily. Xoxo.

CoverGirl Wetslicks Amazemint, $7, will be available at mass-market retailers in July. SexySmile 2-in-1 Whitener Gloss, $36, is available now at www.sexysmileonline.com.

Marc Jacobs Daisy

Marc Jacobs Daisy

TOPS OF THE HOUR Last week’s 2008 Canadian Fragrance Awards at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre crowned the best launches of 2007, taking sales figures, marketing strategies, advertising and pr support, plus packaging and the “juice” itself into consideration. But it wasn’t as stiff as all that. The YSL Beauté team brought supermodel Coco Rocha as their über cool date (who looked stunning in a long black column style dress, natch).

The top luxe award went to Marc Jacobs Daisy and Narciso Rodriguez for Men. More awards went to Yves Saint Laurent Elle; Jean Paul Gaultier Fleur du Male; L., L.A.M.B. Gwen Stefani; Diesel Fuel for Life for Men; Crabtree & Evelyn India Hicks Island Living Spider Lily; with Hall of Fame awards for Oscar de la Renta and Polo Ralph Lauren. Want to know the judges’ favourite based strictly on the scent itself? Estée Lauder Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia is the one.

Lippmann Collection Painter Song

Lippmann Collection Painter Song

HISTORY LESSON The year was 1838. Charles Dickens delivered Oliver Twist to the world and (who knew?) Holt Renfrew swung open the doors of glamour in Canada. Fast forward to 2008 and now you can wear a slice of Holt’s history on your fingertips. Deborah Lippmann has created a nail colour, dubbed “Painter’s Song” (named after Holt’s CEO Caryn Lerner’s favourite Norah Jones song), which captures the iconic magenta shade that Holt’s groupies have come to love. The stylish outpost is in good company. Existing Lippmann Collection shades are named after some of her most fashionable celeb clients, including Sarah Jessica Parker and Mariah Carey.

Lippmann Collection Painter Song, $19. Available in May exclusively at Holt Renfrew.

Yves Rocher S.O.S Hand Cleanser

Yves Rocher S.O.S Hand Cleanser

THE OBLIGATORY EARTH DAY POST We hate to write on subjects that are cliché, but today’s post is for such a great cause, we’ll make an exception. We’ve made every effort to make this Earth Day post worth your while, by finding an initiative that will last all year long rather than just on April 22nd. And so (drum roll…) Yves Rocher has made the definitive decision to can plastic bags for good, starting in June. As a promo, they’ll also ban them on Earth Day. According to the brand, the average use of a plastic bag is 20 minutes but the time it takes for it to breakdown in nature is 400 years. Wow, scary. They’ll be bagging your goods in re-usable bags from then on, which will be sold at cost. Bringing your own bag is encouraged!

Now, for what to bag… We love Yves Rocher S.O.S Hand Cleanser from the Arnica Essential line, $5.50. Most waterless cleansers smell a little too much like Mr. Clean for our dainty hands, but S.O.S Hand Cleanser has a bright citrus-y scent. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait until August to get your hands on the stuff. But hey, we promised valuable info that will last the year…

Playboy Beauty

Playboy Beauty

WHAT A BOMBSHELL Though our modesty (and our parents!) would never allow us to pose in the buff like the beauties gracing the pages of Playboy magazine, that doesn’t mean we can’t emulate the iconic Playboy look. Playboy Beauty has captured the classic sensuality of their Playmates in a surprisingly fresh and girly cosmetics line. We especially like the flush we get from the First Blush cheek colour in Pink Bunny, which would look hot on just about any skin tone. The whole collection, available at select Bay locations, is adorably Elle Woods à la Legally Blonde.

Missoni Purse Sprays

COMPACT SPRITZ It’s no secret that we safeguard possessions in our purse as if we’re carrying top-secret military arsenal. Well, move over pepper spray, and make room for Missoni Purse Sprays. Ste. Anne’s Spa

Ste. Anne’s Spa

CHAKRA AT THE SPA Since we began our post in the Flare beauty department nearly three years ago, fellow beauty editors have reacted with shock when we tell them we have yet to visit the legendary Ste. Anne’s Spa in Grafton, Ontario. Well, thanks to Aveda, we finally made the 1.5 hour trek from Toronto to try one of the latest spa offerings. The food, the grounds and the services all measured up to their impressive reputation.

The Aveda Chakra Balancing Massage is heavenly—but you’ve got to keep an open mind (pun intended). The luxurious massage works with aromatherapeutic oil blends and turns your body to jelly (we dozed off several times). You’re awakened towards the end for guided meditation and that’s where the re-balancing comes in. If you’re one to blow off 5,000-year-old Ayurvedic practices as hocus-pocus, try a more “traditional” massage. But we’re still blissed out just thinking about it.

Aveda Chakra Balancing Massage begins May 15th. For more info on the spa, visit steannes.com.

Susan Posnick Color Correct

Susan Posnick Color Correct

MILLER HIGHLIGHT Why so much fanfare about which celebrity stockpiled what in those obnoxious Hollywood gift lounges? Well, there’s something to be said for starlet beauty savvy. After all, they’re obsessed with looking absolutely perfect in photos, they are privy to the best makeup and hair people on a daily basis, and they’ve tried enough freebies to know what’s good and what swag to throw in the re-gift pile. So here’s the latest scoop from our inside sources: according to Susan Posnick, who debuted her self-titled mineral makeup range in Canada earlier this year, Sienna Miller practically leapt towards her booth at Sundance last year. “This is my favourite product in the world!” Miller exclaimed, reaching for Susan Posnick Color Correct dual ended pencil. One television reporter even caught the gushing and hugging on tape (although the company was never able to track down the tape…) Editor’s take: We love the convenience of a highlighter and cover-up in one. Susan Posnick Color Correct, $20. Buy online »

WEB WONDERS You know how fun it can be trying on armloads of outfits until you find the one that’s just right? Too bad we can’t do the same with haircuts and cosmetic enhancements. Or can we? Developed by researchers at the University of Toronto and Stanford University, Hairmixer.com allows you to use any image (such as a celebrity with a hot new hairdo you found on the web) to try out different hairstyles on your face—for free. Similarly, Liftmagic.com has a genius facial recognition algorithm to simulate plastic surgery operations like rhinoplasty or a facelift using your uploaded pic. We have decades to go before we even consider a facelift, but it was fun (albeit a little creepy) to see what we might look like after one anyway.

LUSH’s Charity Pot

Pantene press event

Pantene press event

GLAMOUROUS DAYS AND SAM MCKNIGHT’S Beauty editors were treated to a stylish press event last week courtesy of Pantene, who brought in Global Brand Ambassador Sam McKnight from the U.K. Editors noshed on popcorn and candy in a private screening room in The Hazelton Hotel while the veteran hairstylist recounted the top hair moments of the year. Incredibly, McKnight styled the hair on 7 of 12 British Vogue covers last year. He has tousled the locks of Kate Moss and Gisele Bundchen “millions of times” and he’s been credited with lopping off model sensation Agyness Deyn’s famously short bleached ‘do (p.s. we’d do anything to see a ‘before’ picture!) During our one-on-one interview, we got countless tips on how to rock the hottest haircuts (look out for this story in the August issue of FLARE) and we probed for insider secrets. Hint: If you follow the every whim of style maker Kate Moss, start growing out your bangs now.
