Canada’s hair royalty was crowned on Sunday at the 22nd annual Contessa hairstyling awards. Since 1988, the competition has recognized the best of the best beauty professionals with the highest accolades in the industry. This year, 23 crystal trophies were handed out to the country’s salon elite, in categories ranging from avant garde to makeover colour. The biggest winner of the night was Tony Ricci from Edmonton’s Ricci Hair Co., who took home Canadian Hairstylist of the Year, Elite Master Hairstylist of the Year, Alberta hairstylist of the Year and Canadian Salon Team of the Year. Also victorious was hairstylist and regular FLARE contributor Tony Masciangelo (check out his work in our December beauty feature Centre Stage), who won Session Hairstylist of the Year. From cotton-candy teasing to eye-popping pigment, the competition was packed with submissions of super-stylized ‘dos that could give Lady Gaga a run for her money.
