Starting this week, a new M.A.C collection created by Ruffian designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais is available exclusively online. The three sets of ready-to-wear nails (in Demilune—black and gold, Demoiselle—red, white and black, and Spectator—white and black, $30 each) were inspired by the NYC design team’s spring 2011 runway show that featured a version of the Spectator nail, which was made in press-on form to save time backstage. When the duo caught models sneaking off still wearing the nails after the show, they knew they had a hit. With this line, Ruffian brings a traditionally ghetto fab product (i.e. the press-on nail) into the world of couture.
We tried out Demoiselle, the flashy three-tone set: a red base with white half moon and pointed black French tip. The press-ons came in a lovely slide-out case and were pre-glued so they were super easy to apply. We simply picked the size that suited each nail best (remember: the shape spreads out a bit when you press it), lined it up with our nail bed, and pushed down. Demoiselle is bold, Lady Gaga-style, but it’s a perfect choice if you want a high-fashion look without the high-fashion price. Try Demilune or Spectator for a mani that’s equally polished but less look-at-me.
Along with the manicure sets, the line includes three lipsticks (shimmery gold, deep red and matte peachy beige, $18 each). The collection will be available at maccosmetics.com until July 16.
UPDATE: Unfortunately, the M.A.C x Ruffian collection will now only be available online to U.S. customers. Ask your American friends to stock up for you!
