Consider it the makeup-world equivalent of slipping into something more comfortable: the new neutral lip, which evokes that classic film trope through its understated sexiness. Like a come-hither negligee, the look teases at nudity and also lets your best assets—ahem, your smoky eyes!—take charge. To keep the look current, Kerry Cole, Becca national makeup artist, recommends a luminous, skin-like finish (read: forget ’60s chalky or glass-like Jenny-from-the-Block lips). “Aim for a happy medium between pure gloss and pure matte, which can look a little corpse-y,” she says. Match your lipstick to the pad of your fingertip (“It’s the closest to your natural lip tone,” adds Cole) and you’re ready to bare almost all.
“With nudes, you want lips to look healthy, so exfoliate first with a toothbrush,” says Cole. Dab lip balm over matte nude lipstick to add a subtle sheen.
