Who doesn’t love a good matte liquid lipstick? When they’re good, they’re great: rich, hydrating and with full, bold coverage. But too often, they can cake, dry out our lips or barely last through one sip of coffee.
When we heard about the newest offering from Nars—the Powermatte Lip Pigment—we weren’t sure which way it would go. But one by one, as the editors in our office took it for a spin, we started to fall in love.
Read on for why this might be the best new liquid lipstick out there—and see the results for yourself.
“I wore American Woman through an entire day of talking, eating and drinking and I didn’t have to touch up once. The applicator is nice and pointed for easy application, the formula is amazing (my biggest pet peeve is when liquid lipstick gathers in the inner rim of your mouth, and this one didn’t do that) and it’s super lightweight. I’ll definitely be getting my hands on some more shades from this collection.” —Alyssa Croezen, beauty intern
“The dark, dark lilac shade definitely looked out-of-place on my pucker, which is usually adorned with a classic red, bright coral or soft pink shade. The intensity of the deep shade wasn’t the only shock—the application of the Powermatte lippie was velvety-soft and runs counter to my experience with often-drying mattes, let alone one with such a bold prefix. The doe-foot applicator made precise coverage a breeze and since it dries nearly immediately, I was locked and loaded in a hurry.” —Andrea Miller, associate editor
“The formula is more liquid-y than I was expecting so it took a few tries to apply it perfectly. Less is more with this lip pigment: I actually found myself scraping the applicator against the opening of the tube to reduce how much was going on my lips. My light coating survived an entire afternoon, after-work drinks and a hotdog dinner. Plus, it didn’t descend into looking crusty or drying out my lips.”—Ishani Nath, associate editor
“I. Love. This. Product. From the formula—basically as weightless as water in the tube yet turns into a matte lipstick the moment it hits your pout—to the colour payoff—totally pigmented without staining beyond removal—this is by far the best matte lip colour I’ve tried. And I’ve done the leg, er, lip work. Most are either too drying or too chalky, but this matte manages to be totally flexible and long-wearing and yet, somehow, some way, you forget you’re wearing it AND can remove it with less than turpentine. Bonus points for minimum feathering, my biggest lipstick pet peeve.”—Jennifer Berry, staff writer
“I can honestly say that this is my favourite lipstick formula ever. It goes on so smooth, doesn’t dry out my lips, and legit lasts all day. It’s pure magic. I have a pretty fair complexion and Get It On is the ideal everyday nude on me. The Powermatte line features a ton of super pigmented colours, but I find this one is great for day and night, because I can build the colour by applying a few layers or dilute it by mixing with a gloss.”—Lauren Ufford, associate editor
“I grabbed London Calling on my way to an after-work event, swiped it on in a cab, and prayed that it would stay put. And stay put it did. I ate, I drank, I talked my face off, and it did not budge. Plus, it wears like a dream. Super comfortable, dries down fast and doesn’t cake or flake. This shade (along with three others) have a permanent place in my purse, and I tell anyone who will listen that they need to try it ASAP.”—Tara MacInnis, associate fashion & beauty editor
