Flesh-tone nails have been all over the runways the past two seasons and we love the look. That’s why we were super excited to find that it’s easy to custom blend shades of neutral nail polish at home, no matter your skin tone. Simply mix clear polish and your own oil-free liquid or powder foundation for a personalized nude that you can wear now and into fall.

Our Test Drive

The inspiration: The Fall 2012 nails at NAHM, Derek Lam, DKNY, M.Patmos and BCBG (to name a few!)

Supplies: Sally Hansen Diamond Strength Diamond Flash Fast Dry Top Coat, $8, at drugstores. Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Liquid Foundation, $42,

Directions: Pour several drops of clear polish onto the inside of a margarine lid (or any piece of disposable plastic you have on hand). Add one drop of liquid foundation and mix with a toothpick. Quickly apply to nails and let dry. Remix the shade and apply a second coat. Brush on a top coat for shine, or leave bare for a matte finish. The more foundation you add to the polish, the more opaque your look. Powder foundation works just as well as liquid.

Get creative: Try adding bronzer into the mix to match your nails to your tan, or swap out foundation for your favourite eyeshadow. If the shadow is a powder, make sure the pigment and clear polish are well mixed before applying, or you will end up with a clumpy finish.
