Montreal Alert

Montreal Alert
September 2008

Whether it’s back to work or back to school, September smacks of new beginnings and—what else?—fabulous fall shopping. Another Montreal winter is looming, so slip on some brand-new baubles and layer those flowing summer frocks beneath newly acquired knits. There’s no better time than now to throw caution into the still-warm wind and take on that cooking class or wardrobe revamp you’ve been dreaming about. Janna Zittrer

SWAP MEET Problem: you’re dying for new fall fashions, but your piggy bank is looking leaner than Victoria Beckham. Solution: Le Marché Montreal’s Swaparama. For a nominal fee, take part in the massive clothing exchange and walk away with as much clothing as you can carry. Until Sept. 16, drop off a bag of no-longer-loved clothing and shoes and pay only $15 cover ($30 with no clothing donation). Or score a VIP ticket ($95 with a clothing donation, $125 without) and gain access sans lineups, plus three new items from Le Marché, cocktails, snacks and a swag bag.
Sept. 17, 6:30 p.m. at The Academy (4445 St. Laurent).

FIGHT CANCER The perfect accessory this season is one that feels as good as it looks. Starting this month, Montreal-based Caracol is selling three specially designed necklaces ($14-$19) and donating $2 from each sale to benefit Leucan, a foundation helping children in their fight against cancer.
And for more gems for a good cause, pick up Anzie’s charitable arm candy: two limited-edition Lifesaver Bracelets, crafted to support the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada. Both the gemstone charm bracelet ($150) and gemstone link bracelet ($475, shown) are available until December at Holt Renfrew (1300 Sherbrooke O.).

BATH + BODY Make a fresh start this fall with all-natural, handmade products from Mooka’s spanking-new bath and body shop. Stock up on old favourites (Satsuma Guava Soap and Vanilla Bean Lip Butter, anyone?) and yummy new treats, including the ultra-moisturizing Avocado & Aloe Soap and a just-launched line of antioxidant-rich perfume oils. Products, $3-$12. 3412 St. Antoine O.

COOKING WORKSHOPS You’ve heard countless times that cooking is as easy as pie, but after one workshop at Ateliers & Saveurs, you’ll finally believe it. Zip in for a one-hour lunchtime lesson or whip up a gourmet themed meal, then marvel at your talents beneath the dining room’s suspended spoon chandelier. Easy as pie? More like steamed salmon with coriander and asparagus sauté. Workshops, $19-$100. 444 Saint François-Xavier.
