Intern's Diary: Trying on Essie's Gel Manicure for the First Time

Rita Remark, lead nail artist for Essie Canada, treats my nails to a (first!) gel manicure and we talk keratin for your nails.

Intern Diary Title

I have a confession to make: I am a beauty professional and I have never had a gel manicure in my life. Sure, I’ve weighed in on nail trends, colours and salon services—including, you guessed it, gel manicures—but have had no actual experience with these famed two-week manicures.

Finally, I found myself on a blustery Wednesday morning losing my gel virginity with Rita Remark, Essie Lead Nail Artist, sampling the brand’s first professional line of incredibly glossy gel colours.

After whipping my winter-ravaged nails back into great shape, the new colour wheel arrives (with 36 options!) and is ready to be spun. Eyeing an Essie “Belugaria” look-alike—a sleek black with a glittery disposition—I discover the name of this mysterious hue to be none other than “Flare to Dare”—my choice was obvious.

As I’m watching Rita turn my tips into modern mystery, worthy of my Lisbeth Salander obsession, I discover essie has broken the gel mould by introducing patented Keratin-care technology. Now no longer reserved for glossy strands or healthy skin, keratin for nails promises to deliver a Vitamin E and Pro Vitamin B5 boost to a process usually deemed dehydrating.

Discovering the “Flare to Dare”

If you are craving a steady relationship with your nail colour but are scared of the reported risks associated with committing to UV salon lamps you can opt for a LED lamp instead. Essie’s professional lamp, pictured above, gives the same glossy, chip-free goodness.

The finished product is nothing short of glistening and the myriad of options available to a nail aficionado not having to waste time air-drying has me smitten like a first-love. Time to call friends and family, I think I’ve found the one!

Essie’s Professional LED Gel System is available now in professional nail salons across Canada.
