Want a rocking body à la Victoria Beckham? Read on and see what she and the pros have to say about getting one

It’s no secret Victoria Beckham is a hard-core fashionphile. From walking the catwalk herself (most recently at Roberto Cavalli) to the luxury labels lining her closets, the former pop star breathes style. And she’s more than just a deep-pocketed consumer; Beckham is thriving in her role as guest designer at denim-maker Rock & Republic. She’s single-handedly upped the brand’s hype and has extended the collection to include men’s and children’s lines. In addition to her R&R revival, Beckham is also behind a signature line of handbags (only available in Japan for now), a fragrance for Coty that launches this fall and a cosmetics line set to follow in 2007. Did we mention she has three sons—Brooklyn, 7, Romeo, 3, and Cruz, 1—and is the jet-setting wife of soccer star David Beckham? Keeping it together is no easy feat, so here are a few tips from the style icon:

The gams

Beckham admits she doesn’t get to the gym nearly enough—hi, it’s called children—but she does work her legs and glutes “by going on the treadmill and walking for about 20 minutes.” She adds, “I don’t want to lose weight, but I think that it’s good, healthwise, to work out.”

FLARE tip “A good way to tone your legs, glutes and thighs,” says Iris Farkas, fitness manager at Calgary’s GoodLife Fitness Club, “is cycling. Upright cycling is very easy on the joints. It’s also a safe, low-impact way to burn calories and support the lower back. And it’s easy to maintain a training heart-rate. Stationary [cycling] is more secure because you have the choice of [having an] incline or not. However, it’s more challenging to be outside—and you can get the kids involved as well.”

The post-baby body

“Seaweed body wraps helped me get into shape after Cruz. Because I’d had a caesarean, for a long time I couldn’t work out at all.”

FLARE tip The healthiest approach to shedding baby weight is to breastfeed (producing breast milk burns up to 400 calories a day), enjoy moderate exercise and eat a balanced diet. “One approach to healthy eating is to think of sectioning off your plate so half of the plate is filled with vegetables and fruit, a quarter is lean protein such as chicken or fish and the other quarter is whole grains such as brown rice or whole-wheat pasta,” says registered dietitian Nicola Day of the Weight Management Clinic at the Ottawa Hospital, Civic Campus. “Round out the meal with skim milk or lower-fat yogurt.”

The visage

Always camera-ready, Beckham cares for her skin with “a mixture of Yon-Ka, Dermalogica and I love La Prairie eye cream and neck cream.”

FLARE tip Want to look as fresh-faced as this frequent flyer? Next time you board, take the advice of Lorraine Hamilton, a beauty therapist at Toronto’s AxiSpa: “Ideally, you want to go onboard with no makeup—just moisturizer—so that your skin can breathe. Spray your face with a face mister that includes humectants such as hyaluronic acid and aloe vera to attract moisture to the skin. Take vitamins such as A, C and E, which will improve your immune system and combat free radicals. And, if you find that your legs tend to swell, apply a cream that has ginkgo biloba, which increases circulation and calms the skin.”

“If I’m going to wear a heel, I like a really high heel, you know? I don’t like those little ones that are just a half-inch.”

FLARE tip Share her sentiments but hate the havoc four-inch heels can cause on your body? According to Surrey, B.C.-based podiatrist Dr. Scott Schumacher, “When you’re in high-heels, your calf muscles get particularly tight, so one of the best ways to address this is by stretching. Try leaning against a wall with your hands and put your leg straight back, heel flat on the ground. Hold it for a good minute, then bend your leg, but don’t pull too aggressively. And don’t forget to alternate your shoes [from day to day] so your feet don’t get contracted into [one] position.”
