Hats off to winter hair

It’s cold, slushy and simply miserable outside. And if that weren’t bad enough, your cold-weather hat has killed your coif. FLARE.com has the fix! Read on for some beauty-solving advice from the experts…

“Hats can flatten and dent your hair, so the best way to keep it looking fresh is to add texture to your hair first,” says pro-stylist Tanya Carpenter. The Dallas-based hairdresser created dStat, a hair care line dedicated to fighting static and frizz. The easiest way to create hat-friendly texture, she explains, is to “pull hair up into a ponytail at night when your hair is slightly damp and sleep on it.” (If you hair is slightly shorter, twist sections of your hair into small buns and secure them with pins). The next morning, “shake your hair out and run your fingers through to loosen the curls,” advises Carpenter.

For a mid-day solution, switch up your part each time you put on and take off your hat. “The heat from your body acts as a styling tool, so you don’t want to keep your hair in the same position or it will flatten, ” explains Carpenter.

“Push bangs to the opposite side under the hat so you can have a nice swoop when you remove your hat.”

If you find that your hat is still wreaking havoc on your hair, simply spritz dStat’s hairspray and run your fingers through to tame those tresses and add extra shine. FLARE tried dstat’s travel-ready towelettes and after just a few wipes, our locks were smoothed, glossed and good to go.
