Gorgeous hair (we’re talking beachy waves, cute and cool pixies, easy braids and sultry ponytails) is central to the perfect summer look, and the right hair colour plays a big part. Now’s the time to lighten, brighten and add vibrancy to your colour.

1. At-Home Ombré:

This is a long-time trend that seems tricky, but it’s actually easier to do than you think! At a recent presentation, Luis Pacheco of Hair on the Avenue demonstrated how to achieve the look of sun-kissed ends with a box dye, right in your own bathroom. Since you’ll be lifting your colour, he suggests choosing a permanent dye that is three to four levels lighter than your natural shade. (For example, if your hair is naturally an 5A Medium Ash Brown—according to Clairol Nice ‘n Easy ColorBlend Foam’s colour chart—choose an 8A Medium Ash Blond or a 9A Light Ash Blond.)

2. Natural-Looking Red

Bright bottle red is certainly eye-catching, but this season, go a little softer with a strawberry blond or auburn. These warm tones will look especially good on those with fair to medium golden skin.

3. White-Blond Hair with Dark Brows

It’s not a natural look by any means, but it’s so deliciously mod and the dark, accentuated eyebrows are right on trend. Ditto for the ultra-light hair. Two trends with one stone.

4. Silvery Grey

Grey hair is no longer something to be ashamed of. In fact, celebs everywhere seem to be riding the silver wave by choice. Nicole Richie, Willow Smith and Kelly Osbourne have all dabbled with grey. But will this trend take off beyond the world of red carpets, editorial pages and music videos?
