"Be inspired by the past but make it fresh,” Damien Carney, international artistic director for Joico. “Your [curl] should have some move- ment, like it’s going to fall out.” To begin, create a side part and smooth out hair as you blow-dry. On the side of your part, wrap two-inch sections around your wand, curling hair inward. Pull down as you curl to keep your roots lying flat. Pin curls in place and use hairspray to set. Repeat on the other side. Once cooled, remove the pins and brush curls under with a paddle brush. “Don’t be frightened to give it a good brush stroke,” says Carney. Define the shape with your hands using styling cream and finish with shine-boosting hairspray.
Tip: To keep heat-styled hair healthy, rejuvenate with a keratin-enriched
spray. “If you’re styling a lot, it’s a great way to add moisture yet
not weigh hair down,” says celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger.
