Beauty Star: Carmindy Gives Us A Beauty Pep Talk

What Not to Wear’s resident makeup artist on her beauty philosophy

Anyone who has ever watched TLC’s What Not to Wear knows that the hit makeover show’s resident makeup artist can bring glowing-from-within perfection to even the most reluctant of women. Having already developed a makeup line with Sally Hansen, Carmindy is now entering the digital realm as the next step in bringing her expertise to the masses. Her iPod Touch/iPhone app, $4.99 on iTunes, gives step-by-step tips on creating different makeup looks, all customized based on your skin tone, eye colour and hair colour. Eager to learn more about her thoughts on all things makeup, we sat down with the blonde belle for what turned out to be the ultimate beauty pep talk.

What’s the best piece of beauty advice you’ve ever received?
“When I was really young, I was very insecure and was wearing tons of foundation. I was assisting a makeup artist as an apprentice and he said, ‘Let your skin show. It’s beautiful.’ It gave me the confidence to take off that layer of insecurity. Ever since then, I’ve become known as the queen of clean-looking skin. On the show, that’s the one thing you notice about all the women: their skin looks amazing but they’re not wearing a lot of makeup.”

How would you describe your overall philosophy on beauty?
“My overall philosophy is about enhancing your natural beauty. I don’t believe that women should change who they are but rather celebrate who they are. One of the things I always tell people is that the definition of celebrity is one who is celebrated, so celebrate yourself. Don’t look at celebrities and models and try to emulate them because I call it the ‘compare and despair’ game. You’re never going to look like somebody else—you’re going to look like you. So celebrate who you are. I tell women that you’ve got one chance to live this life. Do you want to spend it hating yourself and trying to change who you are, or do you want to spend it being completely self-confident and loving your life and loving who you are?”

What made you want to go from being a makeup artist to having your own line of products?
“I was a makeup artist in the fashion industry for 25 years, which was really wonderful. But what really made my life change was working on What Not To Wear and listening to women and knowing that real women out there couldn’t get their hands on some of the most wonderful products. The show helped me deliver my message to real women. Then, creating a makeup line helped me deliver products to real women so they knew what to use. And with the books and, now, the app, there’s the education too.”

What is your must-have makeup product?
“My Your Skin Make-Up is my must-have product. I just turned 40 and it keeps my skin enriched with antioxidants. The Airbrush Spray is another one I use all the time on What Not To Wear. It’s great for lighter coverage for normal to oily skin. It’s a very light and sheer, so I do switch it up and go to my Airbrush Spray for the summer.”

What is your number one piece of beauty advice for women?
“Learn to love who you are when you look in the mirror, before you even think about putting on mascara or lip gloss. If you do not have the confidence coming from within, it will show through any layer of makeup. It’s about treating yourself kindly and saying kind words to yourself. Start to train your brain like an artist. An artist sees beauty in everything, so why not see beauty in the uniqueness of faces?”
