Back with her seventh book, Pretty Powerful, makeup artist Bobbi Brown is taking on much more than lipstick and blush. In a webcast from New Jersey Thursday morning, Brown talked about her new book, which shows transformations of women before and after makeup, and what it really means to be beautiful. “Pretty Powerful means that a woman is pretty without makeup, but really powerful with the right cosmetics because it makes you feel like yourself and that you can do anything,” she said.
To date, all of her books have been about how to do makeup and enhance individual beauty, but Pretty Powerful, which launched in September, features 70 women of all ages, shapes, sizes, and ethnicities, including celebrities and athletes, who each have an inspiring story that makes them who they are. Brown said she wanted to share these stories and help women relate to one another.
“It’s not about always looking perfect, because we have so many roles in our lives. We don’t just work; we’re not just moms; we’re not just girlfriends; we’re not just daughters; we’re not just nurturers. We have so much to do, so it’s about being real.”
For the book, Brown interviewed the women on what beauty means to them, and also shared their makeover journey, with coveted tips and tricks from the makeup maven, of course. Brown shared about accepting her beauty when she was younger and working to overcome her ideals—in her words, looking like a supermodel or Barbie—to realize that she was beautiful. “I do think there’s a big global shift people are realizing it’s much better to be nice than it is to be a diva,” she said.
