September will forever mean back-to-school in my mind— crisp notebooks and fresh fall outfits. Examining the Marc by Marc Jacobs runway show, I was all over the collegiate nostalgia the designer so often—and aptly—taps. His silky ’70s-esque blouses and structured jackets were accompanied by the ultimate accessory: a fluffy freshman mane.

And while others no doubt saw the disco in the big, but soft, tendrils, I honed in on the ladylike spirit of the Studio 54 era by day, when women wore not Halston gowns but Ralph Lauren English-countryside knits and wonderfully weathered Coach satchels. Lambswool-like curls take a bit of practice, but they’re worth it (lasting half a week at least). I’ll pair mine with my favourite nubby pullover, my Hunter wellies and my iPod: British singer-songwriter Nick Drake’s 1969 album, Five Leaves Left, is the ideal soundtrack to sun-dappled autumn afternoons spent taking a break from studying and city noise.
