News flash: The hair barrettes from your childhood are no longer reserved for pigtail-wearing youngsters. The tried-and-true hair embellishments have become the season’s “it” accessory, spotted all over the Spring 2011 runways.
At Cynthia Rowley, oversized barrettes were clipped into low-slung side chignons, while at Prabal Gurung, the plain silver variety was used to secure ponytails at the nape of the neck. At Carolina Herrera, outsized hair-covered clips were positioned sporadically throughout the models’ manes.
The winning look, in terms of wearability and sheer prettiness, would have to be awarded to the hairstyling teams at Rodarte and Badgley Mischka, headed by respective stylists Odile Gilbert and Peter Gray. They gave hair a deep side part, swept loosely across the forehead and secured with a single barrette. To achieve Rodarte’s casual California-girl style, give your hair a subtle wave by tousling with a texturizing spray and clip with a nature-inspired barrette. For a dressier ‘do à la Badgley Mischka, tightly curl your tresses with a small-barrelled curling iron, leaving the roots straight, and secure one side with a bejeweled, vintage-esque pin. –Lindsay MacAdam
