After months of speculation, the waiting game is finally over as Prince William and Kate Middleton announce their engagement this morning. The fiercely private couple, who have been dating on and off for eight years after meeting at The University of St. Andrew’s, apparently became engaged during a private holiday in Kenya in October. The 28-year-old royal proposed with his mother’s ring, a 10 carat sapphire and diamond sparkler that Prince Charles gave Diana in 1981. William said that giving Miss Middleton his mother’s ring was “my way of making sure my mother didn’t miss out on today and the excitement.”
Informing the Queen and close family members and also seeking permission from Miss Middleton’s father, it is a mystery how the engagement was kept a secret until now. The exact date has not been revealed, but the wedding is expected to take place in the spring or summer of 2011 in London. The impending ceremony will be the biggest since Diana’s fairytale nuptials to Charles, and the question on everyone’s mind is what will the bride wear for her big day? Although, no details have been released about the dress, it is sure to be the most talked about gown of 2011. We will have to wait and see whether the bride will opt for a British designer and if so will she go for a classic bespoke gown or instead a younger modern style by the likes of Jenny Packham or Erdem.
