With the entire world watching this month as the 2010 Olympics descend upon Vancouver, the design team at Hudson’s Bay Company has taken the task of defining Canadian style very seriously. Take their new collection of vintage-inspired Olympic gear as proof. Outfitting more than 650 athletes, 300-plus volunteers and several coaches and officials, the line was created with true patriot love. “This collection had to resonate with Canadians,” explains Suzanne Timmins, fashion director at The Bay. The creative process began by breaking down the country’s style identity with one simple question: Who are we? “We’re Canadians and we’re practical,” says Timmins. Four iconic Canadian pieces are the foundation for the collection: the toque, the knitted sweater, the parka and buffalo plaid. Next, the colour scheme was put in place combining shades from the national flag with easy-to-wear black and grey. Timmins’ team of 20—including Toronto designer Tu Ly—also turned to iconic Canadian stories for design inspiration. Standouts included: Legendary ’70s ski team, the Crazy Canucks and Manon Rheaume, the first and only woman to play in the NHL. And, of course, the varying weather in Vancouver and Whistler remained top of mind. A challenging feat? Definitely. But Timmins and her team treasured every minute. “There’s something so wonderful about the games—I love them.” A sentiment sure to be uttered by Canadians proudly wearing The Bay’s take on our national style.
