This Valentine’s Day enjoy a mouthwatering treat that’s sans the calories. Nadège Patisserie, the Toronto-based pastry shop known for combining the delicate art of decadent French desserts with fresh flare, is delighting us yet again, this time with its artful V-Day inspired installation.

The original window displays at its Queen West location are like a pot of gold at the end of a macaroon rainbow over Trinity Hills. Designed by Krona & Lion, the creative collective handcrafted over 500 origami modules from the shop’s adorable packaging boxes. It’s a feast for your eyes as much as it is for your taste buds (because we were only kidding about not enjoying an edible treat as well).

Whether its cherry chocolate macaroons, white chocolate mousse with berries poached in red wine, or heart-shaped gourmandise, the special edition decorative delicacies will win over any heart.

“We wanted to take Valentine’s Day to the next level and create products that not only taste phenomenal but have a unique presentation element,” said Chef Nadège Nourian. Did we mention there’s also dark chocolate lipstick? Now there’s a rich shade that’ll land you a kiss on the lips!

At a recent lipstick lab event at Sephora Yorkdale in Toronto, the creator of Bite Beauty, Susanne Langmuir, debuted a system for creating custom colour on the spot in only seven minutes. Though the equipment currently awaits its patent, we were able to witness the creation of our very own lipstick bullets with the new technology. Langmuir and her team narrowed over 200 shade options to 25, then mixed up trays of pigment that looked like platters of candy. We then picked our favourite shade (I went with a deep fuchsia) and a technician added mint scent (other options were blueberry and cherry) to the formula before a machine mixed the pigment and fragrant oil together.

Another technician then poured my lipstick into a mould (typically it requires six people to make a single tube of lipstick!) and placed the mould on top of a “freezer” that cured my lipstick over several minutes.

Once the bullet was solid, the technician carefully inserted the end into a lipstick tube and pried open the mould. Typically, the darker the pigment, the harder it is to remove the lipstick because deep hues absorb the oils in the formula, causing it to stick to the mould. Though I chose a dark pink, the technician removed two perfect, ice-cold lipsticks for me to take home.

How many fleeting encounters does one experience with fellow commuters on the morning train? Inspired by the strange yet wonderful connections briefly established between foreign bodies en route, veteran Pixar animator John Kahrs is charming audiences with his enchanting cartoon Paperman. A wordless homage to chance meetings evolves into something much greater in this colourful tale told in black and white, all thanks to a little bit of magic. Oh, to live in Kahrs world!

“It had something to do with the random connections you sometimes make with people…every once in a while you’ll make eye contact, then you’ll lose it, and you often wonder who those people were,” Kahrs said speaking to Animation World Network.

The seven-minute animated short wordlessly depicts how the fates reward a lonely man desperate to make a connection again, with the beautiful woman he comes upon, if only momentarily, on a Grand Central Station platform. What was the random opening act from Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph is now being celebrated with an Oscar nod.

The success of Paperman, if not for its charismatic story, is due to Kahrs exploration of an innovative style of animation. Immersing the expressiveness of 2D hand sketches with the dimensionality of computer graphics, the hybrid technique taps the art of drawing that is inherent in Disney’s DNA, said Kahrs. “This just seemed like a good fit for the project. I could see other ideas not working well. In this case, they didn’t serve the story.”

The short is being honoured with a nomination for the Academy Awards’ Best Animated Short.

The 15 piece collection features the signature looks from the Donna Karen brand including cropped puffer jackets New York skyline t-shirts, hoodies and jumpsuits. And let’s not forget the leggings!

Coco Chanel is often remembered for converting symbols of traditionalism into avant-garde badges of female freedom. The third installment of Inside Chanel – the video series that takes a fascinating look into the iconic story of the French fashion house and its imperial Mademoiselle – is no exception.

“Chanel and the Diamond” honours the history of the diamond within the legendary luxury brand and Chanel’s love for the precious stone. “The diamond represents, in its density, the greatest value in the smallest volume,” Chanel once professed.

The ongoing project Inside Chanel journeys into the archives of the beloved brand. At the heart of the series are the glorified niches that have made Chanel what it is today. The first installment “For the First Time” explores how its namesake Coco Chanel revolutionized the realm of perfume with the same passion that transformed insular fashion. The words “[A woman’s] scent should be as important as her style of dress” crawl across the screen, as the video delves deeper and deeper into the story of Chanel No. 5’s budding emergence.

The Paris house than released rare footage and audio of silver-screen legend Marilyn Monroe commenting on the confession that rocked the world, as part of the second chapter “Marilyn and No. 5.” Monroe, possibly the most famous face linked to Chanel’s exquisite and thriving fragrance, admitted to sleeping in the nude, after rather poetically proclaiming all she wore to bed was a spritz of her treasured scent.

The most recent installment, “Chanel and the Diamond,” is a short documentary that tells the story of how an orphaned childhood turned crosses, stars and crescent moons into early innovative designs that dismantled the diamond forever.

Buried beneath our downy scarves, cashmere cardis and Canada Goose parkas, many of us find secret relief in our swaddled selves: We’re hiding winter-wrecked skin. Frightening, for some. A recent Nivea survey polled 1,500 women across Canada and discovered 82 percent of us are least happy with our skin mid-winter. Rita Ora, the British pop/R&B artist, has a habit of relying on Emilio Pucci for her red carpet appearances so it seems only natural she would depend on the major fashion house to design her wardrobe for her first tour, celebrating her self-titled album. Emilio Pucci’s creative director, Peter Dundas, has been working with the star to create a series of costumes that complement her signature urban glamour, while not straying away from the fashion house’s spring collection. “I was thrilled to design the costumes for Rita’s Radioactive Tour, from the moment I met Rita we’ve had a great connection and doing something like this together felt like only a natural progression,” says Dundas who has designed her tour wardrobe ensuring she can move and dance to her choreography with ease.

Ora kicked off her Radioactive Tour in Manchester, UK, last night wearing a very futuristic fitted metallic bodice and ruffled ball gown. She stepped things up a notch when she tore off the skirt to reveal her metallic leggings and lace up boots, which were, of course, metallic too. The metallic haven isn’t all Dundas had lined up for Rita’s tour. She later took the stage in a camouflage jumpsuit with the her name bedazzled on the back, an oversized khaki cape and a body hugging military suit with matching cap.

Last week, I went to the opening reception for Marimekko, With Love, now showing at the Textile Museum of Canada. The Finnish company, which was founded in 1951 by Armi and Viljo Ratia, was revolutionary in its use of colour and print on textiles for fashion and home. Viewing all the vintage prints had Ryan and me thinking of the spring collections, many of which employed bright and graphic look-at-me patterns.

Although the company is the subject of a museum exhibition, Marimekko is very much in the present. EQ3, the Canadian interiors chain, is a major purveyor, and some of my favourite Marimekko prints yet are available there this spring. Timely, as a few of them bare striking resemblance to some favourite runway looks (striking to my fashion-referencing mind, in any case). It’s also convenient: for the trend-obsessed I can’t think of anything.

If twice is a coincidence and thrice is a trend, it’s safe to say that two distinct beauty trends emerged from Haute Couture fashion week for Spring 2013: pink everything and jet black eye makeup. While the former is totally wearable and fresh, the latter has a dramatic edge that might require tweaking for everyday.

The pink-on-pink face ruled at Alexis Mabille, Giambattista Valli and Elie Saab, where models strutted the runways with the ultra-girly hue on lids, cheeks and glossy lips. The trend is versatile, allowing for the application of glosses, blushes and eye shadows in unexpected ways. Try smudging a little lipstick on cheeks for a rosy glow, dust soft, shimmery eyeshadow on brow and cheekbones and even swirl a touch of vibrant blush on eyelids to achieve this feminine look.

Chanel, Versace and Jean Paul Gaultier, on the other hand, went for a harder edge with punk rocker eye makeup—a striking contrast to the frilly, frothy mood that often characterizes spring. Though the three looks had a similar aesthetic feel, each design had its own unique twist. At Versace, makeup artist Pat McGrath added fluorescent green eyeliner accents, while Lloyd Simmonds adorned Gaultier’s models with jewels at the inner corners of their eyes. At Chanel, Peter Philips (global creative director for Chanel Makeup) created a gorgeous, dripping ink effect with net and tulle faux lashes. These three looks may be a touch dramatic for the everyday but they were perfectly suited to the otherworldly beauty of the haute couture runway.

Despite fighting pneumonia, Jennifer Lawrence satisfied our sartorial needs at Sunday’s SAG Awards, bless her heart. The Hunger Games heroine, who has steadily captured the affection and interest of many as of late, wore an architecturally tiered frock, in a deep midnight hue from Christian Dior’s Spring 2013 Couture collection, stunning us in yet another. The girl does not disappoint when it comes to the red carpet. In honour of her understated glamour, we reflect on her awards season success. And take a stab at what we think she’ll wear on the red carpet at this year’s Academy Awards!

Lawrence chose a Prabal Gurung pre-fall 2013 leather yorke gown for the 18th Annual Critics Choice Movie Awards. Hand draped in silk jersey, featuring a belted waist and thigh-high slits, Gurung’s evening gown put emphasis on simplicity, and Lawrence wore it well.

It’s as though Rachel Zoe’s affinity for heavy embellishment and draped sleeves rubbed off on the actress for the 2013 People’s Choice Awards. Lawrence, who’s beefed up her style status since partnering with the stylist extraordinaire, shined in yet another black frock — this time a sequined Valentino from the Fall 2012 Couture collection. While the gown’s romantic spirit maintained Lawrence’s signature mature vibe, its short length took it from vintage-to-Vegas making it a completely age appropriate look. There needs to be more short gowns on the red carpet.

The 2013 Golden Globes saw Lawrence emerge from the hallowed history of haute couture, wearing off-the-runway Christian Dior from Fall 2012 Couture. The ball gown, with its sweeping, full-skirted silhouette, nipped-in waist and structured corsetry was nostalgic of Dior’s “New Look” of the late 1940s, but met the modern age in the middle, via a strapless bodice that was vaguely sentimental of Madonna’s iconic cone bra. It might have been a predictable choice for the actress and new face of Christian Dior, but she looked killer.

Did Jennifer Lawrence rip her Dior at the SAG’s? As the young starlet stood to collect her award for best actress, it appeared as though Simons’ creation tears right across the centre. “Wardrobe malfunction” cries were made, but alas it was none other than the sheer paneling that makes up the hidden layer of the gown’s underskirt, revealed, if only momentarily, when Lawrence hitches the top layer to avoid tripping over the hem. Whew!

Lawrence has certainly proved she is sartorially savvy when it comes to her red carpet garbs. But the question on everyone’s tongue is what the up-and-comer will wear to the most anticipated show of the year, the Oscars. Celebrity stylist Kate Young told us she anticipates the Silver Linings Playbook star will wear Look 28 from Dior’s latest couture collection. A strapless gown in a bright citron hue, featuring an angular full skirt that’s truncated by a sheer inset (this time exposed), for a streamlined finish. The asymmetry and deconstruction are organic — fit for Hollywood’s newest leading lady, whose experimentation with sleek styles has all eyes on her.

At last night’s 19th Annual Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, glosses were shunned in favour of lipstick, lipstick and more lipstick! Every shade of the lipstick rainbow was accounted for: the nudes (Jessica Chastain, Amanda Seyfried and Maria Menounos), the rouges (Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence and Kelly Osbourne) and the pinks (Busy Phillips and Naomi Watts). We’re partial to the shimmery beige worn by Marion Cotillard, the orangey-red donned by January Jones and the feminine rose hue chosen by Rose Byrne—all modern and fresh for the upcoming season.

As part of a series of events, releases and collaborations throughout 2013 in spirit of celebrating Arts & Crafts’ 10th anniversary (dubbed AC10), the Toronto-based independent music company is teaming up with Jeremy Laing. The young designer, whose organic approach to construction have earned him a name in Canadian fashion, will help select musicians from Arts & Crafts diverse artist roster to create a compilation.

While complete details surrounding the collaboration have not yet been released — which admittedly makes the partnership hard to understand — preparations for the Field Trip Festival are in full swing, to no surprise.

AC10 aims to promote creativity and community, but lest we forget the company’s roots are founded in music. A Norman Wong black and white portrait series, and a pop up shop are nice additions to the festivities (just to name a couple), but fans will be elated to celebrate a decade of good music with a full day of tunes performed by artists of the respected Canadian indie outlet.
