Last night, hometown hockey heroes Jonas Gustavsson and Joffrey Lupul, of the Maple Leafs, hosted an event for Hugo Boss at Holt Renfrew’s Bloor Street store celebrating the label’s new expanded space. Somewhere between hamburgers, onion rings, and air hockey matches we sat down with the teammates to find out just what they thought about the latest in womenswear.
Looking for a man’s perspective? Look no further. Let’s just say it’s definitely a different take on what’s hot this season.
Here’s what came to their minds when flipping through spring’s most extreme looks.
Lupul: “I actually think Ed Hardy.”
Gustavsson: “There are a lot of things going on. A painting.”
Ouch! Ed Hardy? So much for my plans for a fully printed wardrobe revamp.
Gustavsson: “It looks like Star Trek.”
Lupul: “It’s not well fitted either, it’s not flattering.”
Don’t tell fashion people that – designer Nicolas Ghesquière was endlessly praised for this collection and we would give up season’s tickets for just one piece.
Gustavsson: “I kind of like that, it’s kind of funny for a party.
Lupul: “I like the little tail lights, it reminds of an old Cadillac or something.”
Point Lupul! 1950s-style Cadillacs inspired Prada’s stellar spring collection.
4. Alexander McQueen
Gustavsson: “Star Trek – that’s when they get married. It’s futuristic. It also looks a little bit like a mermaid.”
The ocean did inspire Sarah Burton’s collection for Alexander McQueen. Hockey players nailed it! Although, I’m personally partial to the Star Trek bride idea…
5. Haider Ackermann
Lupul: “Futuristic casual.”
Gustavsson: “Comfortable, but elegant”
Lupul: “You don’t really know if it’s a top or a scarf…”
We’ve uncovered a new trend: the scarf as a shirt. Should hockey fall by the wayside, these two might just find a future in fashion journalism.
