It seems the fashion industry can’t get enough of irreverent designer mash-ups these days. The latest one to grab our attention is Roots x Douglas Coupland. Consider it the meeting of two Canadian icons, one a venerable retailer and the other a mixed-media patron saint to the creative class. The result? A for-the-times blend of nouveau heritage laced with throwback graphics. Most collaborations that are thrown are way are lofty on hype, stumpy on actual substance. But Roots smartly let Coupland stamp his singular style on everything from accessories (cottage-bound duffles), leather jackets (which hip-hop phenomenon Drake was quick to slip on) and trompe d’oeil varsity tees. At the launch of the Toronto pop-up shop this week (the other location is in Vancouver) we spotted the innately stylish Sophie Green, daughter of Roots co-founder Don, in this playful Test Print dress. It would be a lively summer look, whether you’re a member of Coupland’s beloved Generation X or not.
