HOW LUCKY WE ARE TO BE WOMEN!
It's a complicated time in fashion. Designers are trying to reestablish their identity in a world of bridge lines, collabos, fast fashion, blogging culture and the rise of street-styling one-upmanship.
Last season, the response was to embellish to the extreme—as if to say: Keep up with this Zara (which they did!) and Miroslav Duma (and she did!). This season, there's been a retrenching and the beautiful results are finesse over flash.
The New York City type A sense of competition is still there, but the rules of the game have changed: Who can develop the most subtly beautiful new fabric technique? Who can craft the most flattering but still-new silhouettes? Who can layer, tuck and fold silk, wool, velvet and leather like a zen master? Who can make them palpably, viscerally feel how lucky they are to be women?
