FALL SHOPPING LIST

The top 5 items on Lisa Tant’s Fall 2010 shopping list

Sweeping coats, embellished boots, lush scarves – Fall is the best fashion season. In honour of our September issue, that will land in your mailbox within the next week, here are the top five pieces on my shopping list:

1. A bombshell dress
I’m thrilled about the return of sexy womanly fashion. While I love the look of a sweet babydoll dress (this season’s best come from Miu Miu), it’s a style that a lot of us can’t wear well. I’m most excited by the sexy plunging necklaces, corset bodices and nipped waists shown at innovative collections such as Prada, Louis Vuitton and Nina Ricci. It was also such a relief to see more shapely models on the runway, including the Victoria Secret Angels posse led by Doutzen Kroes.

2. A uniform jacket
In contrast to the bombshell, the military trend dishes up smart tailoring with great details. For fall, the look is more polished. Spring’s cotton flak jackets have been replaced by wool toppers with peplums or full skirts. I’ve got my eye on one of Max Mara’s floor-sweeping coats in a warm camel or steely grey.

3. Minimalism
While I loved all of the crazy embellishment from the past few seasons – rows of ruffles and saw-cut hemlines – most of us look best in more streamlined pieces. Phoebe Philo at Celine has turned the spotlight on beautifully simple tailored pieces that you’ll wear forever. Her collection of leather trousers, lace t-shirts and shearling capes has inspired me to pare down my wardrobe and toss the trendy in favour of streamlined separates.

4. Leopard prints
I’ve always been a sucker for an animal print. My wardrobe is packed with leopard inspired patterns. I’ve already got a few faux fur toppers, a wool scarf, and a pair of sky-high Louboutins in my favourite pattern. I am going to donate my faux fur skirt but will add a wide scarf and tote -and I promise never to wear them all at once.

5. Leather & Suede
Another perennial favourite – and a can’t miss Canadian look – Fall’s top leathers and suedes look best in lean polished silhouettes. I’m looking forward to wearing my black leather t-shirt from Danier and a structured black leather tote from DKNY.

I’ll be back again next week. In the meantime, you can follow me on Twitter.
