Toronto born Calla Haynes, 29, uses her own wardrobe desires to define
her collection. “I always ask myself, ‘Is this what I want to wear?’ I
want to be very honest about what I’m making.” Based in Paris, this
clicked-in Canadian émigré moved to the City of Light to study at
Parsons. After assisting Belgian sensation Olivier Theyskens from
2003–2008 (at Rochas and Nina Ricci), Haynes developed a similar work
ethic. “He demands only the best and was continuously searching out new
and interesting fabrics. I developed that same passion for textiles,”
she reveals. With fabric design credits for Alexander Wang and Jeremy
Laing, Haynes launched her eponymous collection, Calla, of textured
pastel prints and sweetheart bustiers, this spring. The line is already
generating major buzz after she was photographed in her designs by
fashion snapper (and FLARE’s own) Tommy Ton for his popular Jak &
Jil site, and will be stocked at The Room at The Bay, Maria Luisa in
Paris and Debut in New York City. Though Paris currently has her heart,
Haynes maintains “I have a lot of Canadian references that I constantly
go back to: The Group of Seven, Native crafts and nature photos.” Her
unique prints and deftly cut creations are bound to make a splash this
season.
