Visit any of this designer’s three Toronto boutiques and you may momentarily forget you’re still in North America. Franco Mirabelli has been active in the Canadian fashion scene since 1984 but his collections of structured jackets, separates, and patterned frocks reveal a distinct cross-Atlantic influence. Tapped by the Anne Klein Company on graduation day from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, Mirabelli trained for two years under the direction of Donna Karan and Louis Dell'Olio before launching his own label. Cuts are elegant and sexy, without being a slave to trends, with unusual detailing adding edge to high-waisted skirts and pinstripe pantsuits. Mirabelli is also a go-to for trendy Toronto businesses like Yorkville’s The Hazelton Hotel, who commissioned the designer to create tailored black suits for staff to strut in time for the 2007 Toronto International Film Fest.
