Using only organic and sustainable materials like silk, hemp, textured bamboo, and cotton knits, this Montreal based designer is pioneering an eco-friendly cocktail dress market previously nonexistent in Canada. But there’s no hint of granola here. Instead, shoppers will find ruched strapless minidresses, structured a-line frocks, and tailored separates like chic boleros perfect for slipping on when the evening gets chilly. Designer Eugenia Leavitt gained recognition after winning the Toronto Fashion Incubator’s New Looks competition with her Fall 2008 collection, earning nods of approval with her show-stopping finale black ballskirt made entirely of her signature handmade rosettes. She launched her collection in 2006 after studying fine arts and textiles at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and fashion at the International Academy of Design and Technology in Montreal. Seems like Leavitt might not have difficulty convincing us that green can’t be glamorous.
