After over 20 years in the Canadian fashion scene you may expect a
sense of monotony to prevail. Not so for Marie Saint Pierre, who
continues to be celebrated for her avant-garde cuts, daring details,
and layering techniques. Known for refined garments that refuse to
conform to fashion’s trends, the Montreal-based designer recently
surprised catwalk spectators by defying even her own signature
sculptural designs in favor of gowns embellished with ornate ruffles
and bouncy skirts crafted from hand textured taffeta. But the careful
attention to detail was still there in the form of ribbon and chain
necklaces, handcrafted flower dress straps, and asymmetrical
topstitched frills. And the couturiere shows no sign of slowing down,
with a constant evolution of designs, like the egg-shaped silhouettes
that were recent runway favorites.
