Erdem Moralioglu is a mouthful of a name but his eponymous
label is on everyone’s lips. The half-Turkish, half-English designer
who was raised in Montreal and studied fashion at London’s Royal
College of Art, has established himself as a master at crafting pretty,
haute-feminine partywear. His spring ‘09 collection was a full throttle
affair, with sweeping strapless gowns in pastel hues, a profusion of
impressionistic prints and classic jackets reworked with lace and edged
with ruffles and rosettes. FLARE may have been Erdem’s first bit of
buzz (the fresh-faced protégé graced our pages as far back as 1999 when
he won Ryerson University’s eveningwear design competition), but we’re
certainly not his only fan: sizzling screen sirens such as Keira
Knightley and Chloe Sevigny have both donned Erdem’s romantic
confections on the red carpet. “It still feels so new and lovely and
surprising when I see people wearing my clothes,” he says. “I find it
so flattering.”
