“Growing up, I was always surrounded by headstrong women,” says Toronto designer Warren Phrakornkham, 24. “I create statement pieces that are best worn by those with confidence.” Clearly, this fortitude rubbed off on Phakornkham, who cornered me after I spoke in his class at George Brown College and whipped out his impressive look book. One pair of sumptuously scalloped leather and canvas shorts caught my eye. The mustard hue and raw-edge mixed-materials make these a novel look for spring – not to mention a great alternative to the girlish miniskirt. The ambitious designer has just launched a site for his burgeoning label, VanhSophia, where the shorts are available for order. Bare gams season isn’t so far off, after all.
