SHE'S HOT AND SHE'S BOLD
Katy Perry on kissing, dissing and the art of contradiction

Open up pop star Katy Perry’s closet and you’re just as likely to spot outfits channeling Dita Von Teese and Bettie Page as you are Cyndi Lauper and Hello Kitty. With a look that can turn from glamorous to kitschy in minutes, one thing is for certain, Perry’s personality is always front and centre onstage and on the red carpet.

“There isn’t really a place left for people without a strong vision in pop music. You have to do it all yourself because no one is doing it for you,” says the hit maker on the phone from Nashville while taking a breather from her Hello Katy tour. “I want to keep people on the edge of their seats, wondering what’s next.”

Perry is referring to her music, of course, but also her evolving image. After all, the only thing rivaling the fame of her catchy pop anthems “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot N Cold,” off her double-platinum album, One of the Boys, are her notoriously over-the-top outfits. For example, she wore three different dresses at the 2009 Grammys alone, ranging from an Old Hollywood pink gown by Lebanese designer Basil Soda to a loopy fruit platter–inspired ensemble for the stage. Then there was the carousel dress she wore at the MTV Europe Music Awards.

“I think I have ADD when it comes to fashion,” professes the Grammy-nominated singer. “I feel like I’m completely fearless. I take a ton of chances and I never really play it safe.”

She’s a no-holds-barred kind of girl in her personal life as well. “I once bought a boy I liked skywriting for his birthday. It was $5,000. I wanted to prove I loved him in the biggest way. It was a cloudy day and he never saw it. It was the biggest failure of my life,” says the California native. But she doesn’t have any regrets. Take it or leave it, this is who she is. “I’m a monogamous person. I don’t date around or sleep around; I don’t casually do anything. I like to fall in love.”
