JEREMY FISHER UNPLUGGED
FLARE.com sits down with Vancouver-based artist Jeremy Fisher to talk politics

Jeremy Fisher

It didn’t take a curly mop of hair or a couple of Juno nominations—one for best new artist and one for best adult alternative album—to notice Jeremy Fisher. All it took was a $60 homemade video called “Cigarette” and a pitch-perfect sound on the acoustic guitar.

Describe yourself in one word
Optimistic.

You're pretty vocal about politics. Is there anything you'd like to change about the system?
The system is changing; it seems to be moving away from our core socialist values that make Canada such an amazing place to live. I would like to see our leadership shift its priorities back to taking care of each and every person in the country—great health care, education, and housing. Sometimes it feels like they don't know who they are supposed to be working for and it's important that we remind them every chance we get.

What song on your latest album hits home the most?
“Left Behind” because it conveys the sentiment that it's hard to stay connected to friends and loved ones. I'm on the road a lot.

I heard you collect bicycles.
I only have three, but they have different purposes. One can go fast, one can haul heavy stuff and one looks cool and only goes slow which is good if you want to take yourself less seriously.

You took a grass-roots tour on your bicycle. What did you take from the experience?
The journey is more important than the destination, but the destination is pretty good if it comes with a hot shower.

Do you have a favourite place to play or write music?
Stairwells, churches and museums (if you don't get kicked out) are nice because they resonate so much. Anywhere with high ceilings.

Jeremy Fisher

I read in your blog that you like to cook healthy food. Any favourite recipes you'd like to share?
I do! Unfortunately on the road it can be really hard to find healthy things to eat. If I can find a blender this is my favourite mango lassi:
- ½ banana
- ¾ cup yogurt (or soy milk if you can't
  have dairy)
- 1 cup frozen mango chunks
- 1 pod of cardamom, remove seeds
  and discard the husk
- 1 cup water
- Juice of 1 lime
Blend until smooth.

Favourite part of your day
Early morning. [Maybe it’s the early morning lassi?]

What would you do if you lost your voice?
Steal somebody else's.

Any romance in your life?
I've been with my girl for about eight years now and it keeps getting better and better. I'm always amazed that we can still learn new things about each other after all this time.

What's the next big adventure for Jeremy Fisher?
Writing songs for my next album. Maybe a move across the country...

Do you sing in the shower?
Who doesn't? [Umm. I do—but only on a good day.]
