The starlet dishes on fashion, film and keeping her personal life in check

Djimon Hounsou & Camilla Belle
Charmed life
She is only 22 years old, but Camilla Belle has been turning heads for years with her Miu Miu and Vera Wang campaigns and her roles in When a Stranger Calls and 10,000 BC. She has also been the envy of young women everywhere with rumoured hookups with heartthrobs Robert Pattinson and Joe Jonas. Most recently, however, the stunning star is getting attention for her role in the sci-fi thriller Push, in which she plays a woman with supernatural abilities opposite Djimon Hounsou (pictured) and Dakota Fanning.

FLARE: If you could have any super power, what would it be?
CAMILLA BELLE:
Mine in the film is quite fun. I’m a pusher so I’m able to manipulate peoples’ thoughts and kind of control their minds.

F: What was it like filming Push in Hong Kong?
CB:
I’ve always had a fascination with Asia, its culture, people, and religion. It was even more fascinating than I expected.

F: Your character in the film has sex scenes, action scenes, and gun scenes. Is the balance between strength and femininity something you look for in the roles you choose?
CB:
I’ve always been very adamant about playing strong female characters. It doesn’t matter what she is going through, she has to exhibit some strength.

F: Do you admire someone like Angelina Jolie for this?
CB:
I think she definitely chooses her roles quite well. She’s able to be tough in films like Mr. and Mrs. Smith and then play a real woman in Changeling.

F: Growing up in the spotlight, has the media scrutiny been difficult to handle?
CB:
It’s never been difficult for me because I think it comes with the job. If you can’t handle it, it’s the wrong career choice. Any job has pros and cons. Luckily I have a really strong family and friends to keep me grounded.

F: Do you follow the tabloids?
CB:
No. I think you have to have a sense of humour about it. Anyone would become depressed if they didn’t laugh it off and let it go.

F: What do you think the key is to keeping your personal life private?
CB:
Not saying anything. People say too much. The less you say, the more interesting you become. The less people know about you, the more versatile you can be as an actor.

F: I read that your eyes were opened to fashion as an art form after your mom took you to the Chanel and Dior shows in Paris. Would you ever consider doing a fashion line?
CB:
I’ve never really thought too seriously about having a fashion line because I never studied fashion. I wouldn’t want to have my name attached to something without being hands on and actually creating the clothes.

F: Who are some of your favorite designers and labels?
CB:
I did a campaign for Miu Miu a few years ago and it has remained one of my favorite lines.

F: How involved are you with your red carpet looks?
CB:
I don’t have a stylist, I never have. It has always been my mom and I.

F: You guys are doing a great job. You wore a Gaultier dress to the Costume Institute Gala last year that was stunning.
CB:
That was one of my favorites.

F: What shopping tips would you give our readers?
CB:
It’s about buying key pieces. If you’re going to spend a lot of money on something spend it on a great blazer, trousers or a great sweater – something basic that you can wear for a long time. Go to H&M or Zara for fun trendy stuff.

F: I read that National Velvet with Elizabeth Taylor is your favorite movie. Is that still true?
CB:
It’s been one of my favorite movies since I was a little kid. I’ve always been a huge Elizabeth Taylor fan.

F: Have you ever been compared to her with your blue eyes and dark eyebrows and hair?
CB:
Fortunately I have which is a huge, huge compliment. I couldn’t receive a bigger compliment.

F: If you could star in any music video and work with any artist, who would it be?
CB:
Someone like Bob Dylan or Neil Young. I love older music.

F: Which leading man is on your wish list to work with?
CB:
I’m a huge Russell Crowe fan.

F: What other projects are you working on?
CB:
I was [recently] in Louisiana rehearsing for Bruce Willis’ Three Stories about Joan and I made a Brazilian film, A Deriva, in April.
