The Brothers Bloom

Q: Rachel, your character’s wardrobe in this film is fantastic. Did you have a hand in selecting her clothes?
Rachel Weisz:
“A lot of the clothes were mine. I mixed my own vintage pieces with designer stuff.”

The Brothers Bloom

Q: Have you had any grand adventures similar to your character Penelope?
R.W:
“I’ve gone on some great road trips. I drove with a girlfriend from New Orleans to New York. We were supposed to do two days in each place, but we fell in love with Memphis and stayed for 2 weeks.”

The Brothers Bloom

Q: What attracted you to Penelope?
R.W:
“Everything. I’ve wanted to do a comedy for a long time; I think I was waiting for Penelope to come along. I don’t know anyone like her so there was zero research to do.”

The Brothers Bloom

Q: Mark, you play Stephen in Brother’s Bloom, the mastermind behind the brothers’ schemes. In what ways do you identify with your character?
Mark Ruffalo:
“I understand what it’s like to live out of a suitcase and to have to impress people to get a job.”

The Brothers Bloom

Q: How did you prepare for this role?
MR:
“We based a lot on Marcello Mastroianni and the flamboyance and joie de vivre of 8 ½.”

Q: You have your own theatre company. Is that something you’re still heavily involved with?
MR:
“I hope I end up dying on the stage. It’s my deep love; I think that’s where I do my greatest stuff. Right now I’m just doing films because I have three kids to get into college and it’s expensive.”

Q: Can you tell us a bit about the project you’re directing, producing and starring in, Sympathy for Delicious?
MR:
“Sure. It’s a modern fable, a kind of satire on pop culture and religion with James Franco, myself, and Christopher Thornton, who is a paraplegic and dear friend.”

The Brothers Bloom

Q: Adrien, was it difficult to convey the brotherly bond between Stephen and Bloom?
Adrien Brody:
“She inspires Bloom. She’s full of enthusiasm and she’s self-made. Bloom has been living these scenarios that have been concocted for him. So they’re perfect for brining each other an awakening.”

The Brothers Bloom

Q: When you’re selecting roles, do you favour independent films?
AB:
“Most of the movies I have done have been independent because they offer more freedom. The more a movie is one person’s vision, instead of a committee, the more original it tends to be.”

Q: Can you tell us about the upcoming thriller you’re starring in, Giallo?
AB:
Giallo is a thriller about a girl who is abducted by a taxi cab driver. It was a chance to explore something new. I’m a fan of Dario Argento ‘s work. I’m friends with his daughter [Asia].”
