neo-goth Christmas tree by Gareth Pugh

neo-goth Christmas tree by Gareth Pugh

DESIGNER CHRISTMAS
Who says Christmas has to be a conventional affair involving cuddly Santas and tacky tinsels? Recently, in the spirit of the holidays, fashion wonder boy Gareth Pugh unveiled his neo-goth Christmas tree at Topshop’s flagship store. It reminds me of something Tim Burton would use as a prop in one of his movies! As cool as it is, I wish Pugh designed a capsule collection for Topshop instead.

American Gangster & Gladiator

American Gangster & Gladiator

FASHION DRAMA
Sir Ridley Scott, the director behind American Gangster and Gladiator, has a biopic about one of fashion’s most famed families, the Gucci clan, in the works.  Sounds like an odd match at first, but apparently a large chunk of screen time is devoted to the family’s blood stained past.  Guess that makes a bit more sense.  Don’t get too excited though, it won’t be hitting theatres until 2010 and there’s no word on casting yet.

DMB DREAMIN’
My forever fav band, Dave Matthews Band, just announced their Summer 2009 tour – with no stop in Toronto! Come on DMB, I look forward to your shows at the Molson Amphitheatre every summer. It’s their first tour since the passing of band saxophonist LeRoi Moore. But in happier news, their new CD is set for release in April ’09.

LOVE AT FIRST LISTEN
Yay! The Bird and the Bee just released a new single, “Love Letter to Japan,” from Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future, set for release in January ’09. Never heard of the band? You probably have. The duo’s songs have appeared in movies like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Sex and the City. Front-woman Inara George’s fresh voice never fails to put me in a good mood! —Dalia Kagan, FLARE Intern

Nadia G's Bitchin Kitchen

Nadia G’s Bitchin Kitchen

WTF WEDNESDAYS:
It’s time for yet another beyond questionable item. This time a cookbook called Nadia G’s Bitchin Kitchen landed on my desk. Need I say more? It’s filled with content from their online cooking show called bitchinkitchen.tv. Chapters including “PMScapades,” and “Halloween Hootenanny” are accompanied by beyond campy and overtly sexual photos. Appetizing? Not so much.

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman

ROLE PLAYING:
Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams have teamed up with Roman Polanski (The Pianist) to create a fake perfume ad. Admittedly, it sounds bizarre, but I’m very intrigued. Video artist Francesco Vezzoli is behind the piece, which supposedly involves a vicious cat fight. It’s making its way to Rome’s Gagosian Gallery in Feb and I’m sure youtube shortly after.

Toronto Stories

Toronto Stories

A GOOD THING:
When Canadians do good, Canadians show up in support, right? Well if that’s the case then Toronto’s Royal Cinema on College St. should be packed this week as Toronto Stories, a film by Aaron Woodley, Sook Yin Lee, Sudz Sutherland and David Weaver, takes to the screen for daily screenings at 7 and 9pm. The Official TIFF Selection is a collection of four stories, thick with human error, which interweave to ultimately unveil human compassion—a Crash-like tale that is a real must-see. www.mytorontostories.com

Floria Sigismondi

Floria Sigismondi

VIDEO STAR:
Hamilton, Ontario native and former FLARE photographer Floria Sigismondi is making a biopic on Joan Jett starring Twilight’s Kristen Stewart. How cool is that!? If you’re not familiar with Sigimondi’s work, a quick visit to www.floriasigismondi.com is a must. For a vintage sampling, checkout Marilyn Manson’s “Beautiful People” video, The White Stripes’ “Blue Orchid” and Sigor Ros’s “Unitled #1”. Eerie? Yes. But mini masterpieces in my mind.

Prop 8: The Musical

Prop 8: The Musical

LAUGH IT OFF:
One way to get over bad news is to make a joke out of it; that’s the approach taken by Marc Shaiman, writer of Prop 8: The Musical, starring Jack Black, Neil Patrick Harris, Allison Janney, John C. Reilly, SNL’s Maya Rudolph and more. This hilarious response to the enforcement of Proposition 8 against gay marriage in California can be found at www.funnyordie.com.

Brandy

THAT CAREER IS MINE:
Brandy is back. She’s gone through so much tabloid drama that I wasn’t sure if she’d get it together and make a new disc. Luckily she did and it’s called Human. Songs like “The Definition” and “Right Here (Departed)” are snappy enough for singles and her voice is untouched by the trauma. It isn’t groundbreaking but at least it has her back on track.

True Blood

True Blood

TWEENLIGHT:
I saw it and I have to admit, I got into it. Between Robert Pattinson’s bedhead and bedroom eyes, there is a story that actually keeps you going. If you’ve already seen it, don’t get your fangs in a funk or start suffering from Vampire withdrawal…just check out a TV show called True Blood. It stars former FLARE cover girl Anna Paquin and it is like Twilight for grown up folks.

Michelle Obama's inauguration outfit

Michelle Obama’s inauguration outfit

Sketches for Michelle Obama’s inauguration outfit – from left to right: Monique Lhuillier, Betsey Johnson, Christian Lacroix and Karl Lagerfeld

YES WE GLAM:
A few of the world’s top designers submitted a few dress sketches to the State in hopes that Michelle Obama will consider one of them as her inauguration outfit. My favourite is Monique Lhuillier’s glamorous red ballgown-ish number. I know it might be a little bit Beyonce-circa-BDay but I think it would really suit her and make major headlines. The Betsey Johnson one looks a little too cartoony for my taste and the Lacroix design is full-on Grace Jones. Which makes me wonder…what would Gareth Pugh design?

Summer Heights High

3x THE LAUGHTER
There’s something undeniably entertaining about HBO’s newest hit, Summer Heights High. Funny-man Chris Lilley plays three drastically different, but equally hilarious characters. From the wildly disobedient Jonah, to the spoiled and “random” Ja’mie, to the eccentric and flamboyant Mr. G, Lilley provides us with many laughs on otherwise ordinary Sunday nights. Be sure to tune in Sundays at 10:30 on HBO Canada!

YEAR END REVIEW
Besides the holidays and the award season hype, one thing I love about this time of year is all of the best and worst lists that surface. Pitchforkmedia.com is one of my favorite stops for music reviews and today is the day they’re opening up their polls to readers. So exercise your rights and cast your votes for 2008’s greatest hits and biggest misses. P.S. Leona Lewis gets my vote for best new artist!
