Fifth time’s a charm for Ryan Gosling, who is now a Golden Globe Award winner after picking up the trophy for Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical or Comedy at the 2017 Golden Globes for his role in La La Land.
After thanking the movie’s director Damian Chazelle and leading lady Emma Stone, the Canadian star turned serious to thank a very special person in his life—his longtime love Eva Mendes. “While I was singing and dancing and having one of the best experience of my life, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our other, all while her brother was battling cancer,” said the actor before dedicating the trophy to the memory of Eva’s late brother Carlos. The father of two also thanked his daughters, Esmeralda and Amada.
Ryan scored the award for his unbelievable performance as a struggling jazz musician in Damien Chazelle’s modern-day musical La La Land. The film is being touted as the awards season darling and is expected to fetch numerous Oscar nominations later this month.
In the past, Ryan received nods for his work in The Ides of March (2011), Crazy. Stupid. Love (2011), Blue Valentine (2010) and Lars and the Real Girl (2007).
While being acknowledged by the Hollywood Foreign Press is an accomplishment for any actor, Ryan’s greatest role in life is that of a father and partner. The London, Ont.-native has two daughters—Esmeralda and Amada—with Eva Mendes, whom he met on the set of 2012’s The Place Beyond the Pines. The adorable pair are one of Hollywood’s most private couples, so it comes as no surprise that Ryan opted to walk the red carpet solo on his big night.
