The Artist cemented its frontrunner status for the 84th Academy Awards on Tuesday, January 24. The black and white silent film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor in a Lead Role (Jean Dujardin), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Bérénice Bejo), Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Best Original Screenplay (Michel Hazanavicius) and if there was a category for cutest dog, co-star Uggie the Jack Russell Terrier would surely have popped up as well.

Among the pleasant surprises: nine films were nominated for Best Picture when only five were guaranteed, making room for outside shots such as Moneyball and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close alongside favourites such as The Help and The Descendents. Rooney Mara snuck into an incredibly competitive Best Actress In A Leading Role race that includes perennial favourites Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams. And Melissa McCarthy’s comedic chops in Bridesmaids won her a nomination for Best Actress In A Supporting Role alongside other newcomers Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer for The Help.
